Hi guys,

I've a problem. During the day time, I think the network traffic is quite heavy. My ADSL connection becomes intermittent, just like on a roller coaster.

I try to ping the Cisco Router 1720, but there was request time out. I'm suspecting heavy data packets.

Anyone has experienced this and would like to advise details? What is the "best practices" and command lines.

Thanks in advance.

First of all, who is your service provider and what type of service have you got?

Can you explain what time of the day it is when this happens, it may be down to the fact that you are in an area where there are many heavy ADSL users. Training of the router will occur every now and then when the contention ratio is at its max - meaning you lose the signal from the DSLAM. note: if you keep shuting down and doing a "no shut" on the ATM0 or Dialer 0 interface this will not clear BAS and therefore does nothing. There is a 20 min TimeOut on the Network. Therefore, turn off the router completely.

Hope this helps.

Hi Gunn,

Thank you for your reply. I noticed that the intermittent outage happens in the morning, sometimes in the afternoon. Is there ways or 'best practices' to configure the Cisco 1720 router in such as way that it will let all the packets go thru? Or would have better congestion control?

Are there any command lines or scripts? : )

Problem is temporary solved after I do a 'hard' reset on the router. But after 10 mins + or so, the same problem comes back. I'm suspecting huge downloads from users in the network. Is there any way to configure the router such that it can sustain the load and would not go down intermittently?

Thanks loads.

Cheers,
