I have a Cisco 1600 that was given to me that I wanted to have a play with on
booting it asks for a password I tried to follow a guide to reset the
password with out any luck

From doing some reading it points to the current user is unable to modify the
router configuration because of an AAA authorization rejection.

Could some one give me some help in resetting this to factory default ?
please

As soon as you're doing the step of bringing in the saved config with the copy start run command, you're getting the aaa authorization kicking in and causing a problem. Rather than do that last copy startup-config running-config, just do erase startup-config do delete the old config.

You'll also have to restore the config-register.

Router>enable
Router#erase startup-config
Router#config t
Router(config)#config-register 0x2102
Router(config)#end

Just reload if you want, and your router is pristine and will boot to the System Configuration Dialog.

Thank you that worked perfectly

The other way in this case would have been to tftp the startup config to a computer before you did the copy start run, modify the config with Word Pad (wipe out all the aaa stuff and add "no aaa ne"), then do what the Clued One said, and tftp the config back. That is if you wanted to keep the config running on it...

If I can get to the priv exec prompt in any used router or switch I buy (the #), then the first thing I do is tftp the config and the IOS.
