Can someone tell me how can I break the enable password for cisco 12000?. I have tried the traditional way by BREAK'ing the boot and changing the confreg to 0x142 and then reset. For some reason it does not work. The router still boots as is instead of Router>.

Any suggestions?.

Let me expand on that...in rommon, there is no "0x" preceded by the register setting. However, in IOS
router(config)#config-reg 0x2102
is where the "0x" is.

Burt,

Thanks. Silly not to mention, tried that as well. For some reason it still does the same. I am using PRP-1 cards by the way with 12.0(27)S4. I have even taken out the redundant PRP.

Thanks

So you break and it boots into
Router>
or
rommon1>
Which one? You are saying that it boots into
Router>
even after a break---from there, it won't accept "confreg" at all---only in rommon. If it boots into
Router after you do a break, then
rommon1>confreg 2142
rommon2>reset
And then it boots into
Router>
then the previous user had issued
Router#no service password-recovery
in which case, you're screwed...sorry to break it to you...
Where did you get this? You can always try and get the password from whomever sold it to you, or you'll have to reload the IOS and blow everything away via TFTPDNLD from rommon. That command sucks because when the admin gets fired or finds another job, they usually don't bother telling you these things...lol

Hmmm.. well I don't work with this, just found one in the lab and want to use it probably to learn it.

Break - ROMMON - change the confreg to 2142 and reset... now when the router boots back it is in Router>... anyway i will dig into it. looks like need to find someone who worked on this stuff

Thanks

Then they definitely put in
router>en
router#no service password-recovery

Burt,

One other comment was for confreg '0x' works both on rommon or Router(Config) mode. So you can use it either way.

Anyway, I have saved the config and reinstalled the router. Seems to be up and running.

Thanks

On the 2500 series routers, it won't accept the 0x in rommon...thought it would be the same all around.
