Hello,

CICS vs MICS... what's the difference?

I'm looking at replacing an old Panasonic with a Norstar.

The Panasonic core receives 16 pairs via plug/jack. I understand I may have to rewire this because the Norstar cannot receive lines this way... that they need to be punched in? Any help on a diagram or image link would be great.

Once everything is wired, should I expect dial tone and incoming calls ok without programming? I wanted to turn it on and start to program (or learn to)during office hours. 8 lines 10 ext.

Thanks in advance for your input,

First Timer

A CICS is usually 8 trunks and 16 stations (basic) except you can add a card for 8 more stations.
A MICS can expand with add on modules and it can also have digital trunks on it.

Well, actually the CICS will support a T-1/PRI circuit, however, if you're footing the bill, I'd put the money on a MICS. You start with double the available extensions, and can expand through the roof. In addition, any VM you would have put on the CICS is equally compatible with the MICS. The hardware cost is ironically minimal. To install a fully expanded CICS (24 ext's), you will pay more than a base model MICS.

Since when does the Norstar Compact ICS support PRI?

The manual does not state this? Are you saying Nortel has made an error and not stated this in the latest manual, that they support PRI? I guess their marketing department also messed up and forgot to mention PRI in the brochures. Oh wait, the design department even forgot to design a PRI card. You better get down to 8200 Dixie Road in Brampton and clear this up, the rest of the world and Nortel don't know about this amazing discovery you have made.

yep they just didnt tell the mitel people :)
Happy Friday everybody.

The only way i can do that is get a channel bank ... convert the T1/PRI to loop start lines and voila

the SBC lines are a mess down there; I'm thinking of just installing the core up in an office closet... think SBC would mind if I splice their lines in the basement?

Hey TheMitelguy, I don't get on the Mitel forum to trash Mitel even though I am Mitel certified, so just to let you know you won't become a popular person trashing Nortel here.

Actually, I'm Nortel certified and sell it as well (via the authorized dealer channel). By no means did I ever trash Nortel. I guess I may have trashed the user with the comment that was completely wrong - however I guess that's what you get when you say something and you have no clue what you are talking about. Further more, look at the Mitel forum and you will see Mitel people don't post comments that are false. You will find a group of people asking question and a group of qualified people answering their question correctly.

I apologize if my comment was innappropriate. I may have misunderstood your comment. It is true that we have the problem on the Nortel forum with users wanting to be techs.
Please accept my apology.

TheMitelGuy-

I'm glad you're having fun at my expense, and I refuse to turn this forum into some sort of adolescent battle ground, but I believe some clarification is in order.

I've been a tech since 1989; a lead tech (whatever that means) for the last 15 years. I am US DOD school trained 29V-H. Though I have never given much weight to the word "certified", I have an extensive list of certifications, Norstar included. The company I work for is a Nortel house. Norstar pays my mortgage and feeds my family.

I mis-spoke, and should have thought a little more before I submitted my post. One brainless statement in 17 years ain't bad.

Deal with it.

I have a feeling this is going to turn into the "Are we helping" thread. Why can't everyone just get along?

Hey, I apologized and anyway what was wrong with the "Are we helping thread"?

So is the answer that the CICS does support T1/PRI? When I read I bought a DTI card off of Ebay and installed it in my CICS. Now I cannot get it to boot up no matter what I do. The phones just flash forever. I removed the DTI card and put back in my old LS/DS and still the same things happens.

And I cannot find anywhere in the manual where I would set the coding, framing, received digits, protocal, etc.

Please help ASAP!!! This is all your fault for saying it word work!

Oh yeh one other thing. Just kidding.

NO, the CICS will not suport a PRI. Unplug the system and then plug it back in. While the phones are flashing unplug it and do this a couple of times and see if the system will come up again. Make sure that your software card is plugged in good and tight.

You did not read the last line of my post did you. Sorry I should not be posting on Saturday nights. My post seemed really funny to me at the time. Sorry about that.

Heh heh...maybe one of them there Avaya DTI cards would work if we stuck a MICS s/w cartridge in that CICS?

I tested your idea with some scrap parts we had in the lab. It does work. The problem is that it will only work if I stand on one leg, hop up and down, and sing happy songs to it. It will make it difficult to keep it working through out the weekend.

Hmmm...Ebay..."Phone system for sale - worked on our test bench. The system is kind of a hybrid. Unfortunately I can offer no warranty because I am not familiar with this type of hybrid." - No Reserve and Good Luck
