If I don't care to keep the programming and want to go from a 1.0 to 7.1, do I do the startup and wait the five seconds and pull the power?

The upgrade should go just fine.
I am not aware of any need to pull the power plug, other than to access the **startup sequence.

You can't upgrade to 7.1 from anything below 6.1 or it won't boot up. Pull the plug trick works most of the time. If you have a 6.1 sitting around load that first, then go to 7.1.

Best to wait 20-30 seconds first before power down on applying, saves you trying again if didn't work first time.
