I have a Norstar CICS cabinet with 2.0 software which I would like to upgrade to 7.1 software. I know that you can't install 7.1 on a CICS that had 2.0 previously.

Is the upgrade procedure to...

install 4.1 software - then install 6.1 - then install 7.1 software ?

Thanks.

Yes

or for the sake of acquiring all that software or upgrade tools and dont mind spending a half hour programming then do system startup:

-Recycle power
-Do a STARTUP
-When it states "Applying Template" wait about 20 seconds then power down
-Swap software, power up, wait, re-program.

Remember 2 digit DN's does not have Hunt Group feature.

I tried the procedure listed here. I'm trying to upgrade from 4.1 to 7.1. It didn't work for me. The set I was using to do this procedure just kept flashing the arrows. Is there any other suggestions you might have?

Do yo mean after you powered up with new software it was flashing?
Did it say applying template before hand?

Flashing is normal for up to maybe 5 minutes or so....how long did you wait?
I have never heard of it not working.

I had the 4.1 software card in the system. I unplugged the cabinet, plugged back in, did the **STARTUP, said YES to erasing memory, used the same template, same starting DN number. The display said the usual "APPLYING TEMPLATE". I waited the 20 seconds, unplugged the cabinet, changed the software card to the 7.1, plugged the cabinet back in. I disconnected all other phones in the system and just used one phone on port 101. The phone kept flashing with no end. I'd say I waited at least 5 minutes, maybe more. I didn't actually look at a clock to see if it was 5 minutes. When I put the 4.1 card back in to try the process again (I tried a couple times), the system came up a lot faster, about 2 or so minutes.

All I can suggest is try 10 seconds at Applying template and maybe wait 10 minutes or so for 7.1 to initialize.
You do not need to disconnect sets....leave sets as was when you applied template.

I think the 4.1 is coming up quicker because that's what the CICS remembers right now until the 7.1 is initialized.

On a MICS you could wait much longer too.

Thanks curlycord for your help... waiting 10 seconds did the trick! The system came up using 7.1 within 3 minutes when I waited only 10 seconds after "APPLYNG TEMPLATE" displayed.

I appreciate the insight. I was thinking I was forced to buy an upgrade tool. I've never dealt with a CICS before, and thought I read somewhere that you can just change the software cartridge and the only consequence is all system programming would be lost. Then I found that Nortel says that you can't just go to 7.1 if you had a lower software version than 6.1, otherwise the phones will blink indefinitely. Your workaround definitely saved me some $$!
