Under other TP Systems it is possible to broadcast a message to Ellipse users, for example advising of an outage or shutdown.

Does anyone know of a way of doing this through CICS?

Don't know what type of system you have. We have ellipse on unix system. what we do as part of the process to bring down cics is to first run a custom batch job on ellipse that only runs a script that has a statement
mailx -s "Ellipse is coming down in 5 minutes please log off" ellipseuser@xyz.com

the ellipseuser@xyz.com is set up on the unix box and in our email system where it auto forwards the email to all of the ellipse users defined to ellipseuser@xyz.com.

then we wait five minutes and then we bring down cics.

Haven't spent much time to develop another method to do this since the project was overdue to begin with.

Hope this will give you some ideas.

Thanks for your reply. We're running Ellipse on a UNIX host but unfortunately not all users have an email address. Ideally I would like to broadcast through CICS so all users would see the message.

CICS doesn't have anything a broadcast facility. Do you use Citrix? You can send messages to all Citrix users through that.

Hi Andrew,

We're using a fat client - no Citrix. For some reason management are against Citrix.
