Can the I.B.M. clients be used to link directly to a mainframe?

I am not really sure on what you mean by 'I.B.M. clients' but if you are referring to the network client, there is another software that you should use to emulate a mainframe(MVS) session. I am currently using Personal Communications Workstation Program (commonly referred to as PCom).
You should try the IBM website for more information. I do not know the much about the details.

I.B.M. HAS WHAT THEY CALL CICS CLIENTS. PART OF THAT PACKAGE
CONTAINS A TERMINAL EMULATOR. BUT THERE IS MUCH MORE FUNCTIONALITY BUILT IN TO THEM AS WELL. IT SEEMS THAT IF A COMPANY WANTS TO PUT THEIR CICS APPLICATIONS ON THE WEB, THIS IS AN IMPORTANT PIECE. THERE IS MORE INFORMATION ON THEWEBSITE, BUT I WAS LOOKING FOR SOMEBODY WHO HAS EXPERIENCE USING IT.
