My computer (Win XP Pro SP2, NTFS partitions) has frozen on a couple of occasions recently.

I went to run chkdsk via Windows Explorer>properties>tools and get the message "Windows is unable to complete the disk check"

I select the option to automatically fix the file system and schedule it to run at next startup. However it fails to run!

If i go to run>cmd>chkdsk I get the message "file record segment xxxxxx is unreadable"

If I type chkdsk c:/f and schedule it to run at startup, it still fails to run!

Anybody got any ideas please??

have you tried /R

i beleive /R implies /F

if it can't fix the problem it might be a corrupt FAT or failing disk.

You may be lucky and find a 3rd party program can fix the error, but if it's a failing disk, i'd backup and replace it ASAP!

Thanks for the prompt reply!

I just downloaded a disk check program from Maxtor and it said "Your HD is failing, replace immediately"!! :-(

Oh well, anybody recommend a good disk cloning program that does not have 'Norton' in the title?

Cheers.

Most new drives come with cloning software (for their drives only) Borrow one!
