I want to use Mac Chinese input with the Song font to input Pinyin characters (which are a part of this font in the Latin-Extended B character set). To do this, I go to Insert > Symbol and choose the characters I want to use. When I insert them into the document, they appear as an underscore.

Why does this happen??? I haven't been able to determine if this is an incompatibility with Word or a problem with the language kit.

Does ANYONE have any ideas?

I thing it's a Word problem. Chinese Fonts requires two byte coding. Even when the macOS supports 2 byte coding, the application also has to support it.
In the past, there were special programversions available, al least for the Japanese Kanji Fonts.
