I have a server set up as a child domain of a organisation. I would like to ask whether is it possible for new server be set up as a domain controller of this child domain? If so, can anyone shed some light on how to go about.
if this is a server 2000 or 2003 do the following:
-install server 2000 or 2003.
-make the network config point to the dns server of the child domain.
-open command prompt type dc promo.
-follow the instuctions.
-have fun using the server.
Sinds you are playing around on this make the new server dns server as well and let both servers point to themselfs after that is done for nameresolution.
You could also make them both dhcp servers if the child domain is in an other location and you dont wanna have any work on networkproblems in the feature.
Exclude half of the ipaddresses on both servers
(server 1 1-100 excluded server 2 101 200 excluded)
As for the both server being dns server make sure you have the following.
Windows 2000.
DNS server A will need to have DNS server B as its primary DNS server and its self as a secondary..
and Vice versa Server B will have Server A and its primary DNS..
The reason for this is that you can get whats called DNS Islanding..
Windows 2003
I would do the same, I have spoken to someone MS and they same in 2k3 islanding is not an issue.. but to be safe to it this way//..
One other thing is this a 2k3 domain? if yes and you are adding a new server which is 2k3 as DC.. you will have to run
adprep /forestprep
adprep /domainprep..
this will extend the scheme to allow the 2k3 server to become a dc..
adprep /forestprep adprep /domainprep
you only need this if you add a 2003 dc to a 2000 domain.
I have running a few 2003 domain's and never needed that.
