checking out files

When I go to check out a file (regardless of ext.) i can check it out by double clicking, check it out by the edit> edit file function in the toolbar, but when I right click, and choose 'checkout' it checks the file out but nothing happens. No new window appears with the file for editing. Anyone else having this problem? Not a big deal but I am trying to document steps and procedures

What you're describing sounds like what the VSS designers intended. Double-click is just a short-cut for "Edit." (By the way, you can modify this using the Tools-Options General tab) No app should start when you choose Sourcesafe-Checkout from the menu.
