I need to know how to make sure theese services are running on my exchange 2000 server to ensure its gets backed up with backupexec.
Directory (registry shows MSEXCHANGEDS)

what is this Directory Service?

what do the instructions mean by (reistry shows MSEXCHANGEDS)?

Any help would be appreciated. thanks [afro]

Well , first of all these services , Dir.service , and information store service are the heart of exchange ,
it's like the Active DS of the domain. it contains all the data and bla-bla-bla ...
the best way to fully backup your exchange is the "cold" way
it's when you stop all exch. services , and backup the exchange DB file ( its priv.edb and pub.edb , stored at exchsrvr\mdbdata directory ) but ofcourse it's available only if you can stop these services at your corp.
there are some backup programs that allow you to backup your data online , but it's takes a lot of time . in BACKUPEXEC you can run script before the backup job to check the state of the services , something like : net start .....

If you need more help , let me know.

Good Luck

Alex,

basically i need to know how to start the directory service and how to investigate why its not running. exchange is working properly. i am just unable to back it up. backup exec needs to have the directory service service running in order to back it up.

Do you have the Backup Agent for Exchange installed?

What was the solution, in case it pops up here again?
