Anyone know where I can find a checkered flag pattern to use for "fill" or how to make one?

Oh boy, sounds complicated. Just haven't used the mesh tool much yet but I'll give a shot. Thanks for starting me in the right direction. Probably have more specific questions once I get started.

Ok, I drew a square, clicked on the centered dot and got 4 boxes with the mesh button. Then I clicked in the center of each of those four boxes and now have 16 but I can't figure out how to every other box with black. Got it to "fill" once but only in part of the "flag" and the color faded around the edges. Now what?
