Use the space bar when it has the focus - of course getting the focus on to it without the mouse can be tricky!

Yes, we need more detail. If it is a checkbox on a userform, then Tab will eventually get it in focus, and spacebar will check it.

If it is a checkbox on a sheet, as Tony mentions, it could be tricky getting the focus without the mouse.

it's a checkbox on a normal worksheet. Is pushing space when cursor is over it the only option?

No - you could link it to a cell and change the value in that cell.
