Can anyone tell me what this error means?
nsrmmd #1: check_tapealert: check_cdi_infop and cdi_open failed, 7 7 there was not a device file name passed in to CDI for device \\.\Tape1
I have not done any Legato support for 3 years and have no access to the knowledge base any more.....

It means that the drive reported an error due to whatever reason. CDI is the "Common Device Interface" what was introduced with NetWorker 7.0.

If the error persists, i expect a hardware problem.

Thanks for that.

Every drive in the Silo is showing the same error so I'm guessing maybe windows drivers/scsi card/cables/term.

Looking through the logs the system showed no errors and then the server started without a clean shutdown. I get the feeling that the customer has been playing about....

from KB....
Error: 'nsrmmd #1: check_tapealert: check_cdi_infop and cdi_open failed, 7 7 there was not a device file name passed in to CDI for device \\.\Tape1'
Cause: IBM driver was the cause of this problem.
Fix: Upload the latest driver from IBM

With the introduction of driver level 5.0.5.9 and thereafter, two versions of the device driver are made available, one that prohibits multiple opens on a single tape drive and one that will allow multiple opens on a single tape drive. Drivers that prohibit multiple opens on a single tape drive are indicated (when presented by the Windows Plug and Play Device Manager during device configuration) with the text string '(for Tivoli Storage Manager)' in them. Drivers that allow multiple opens on a tape drive do not have the text string '(for Tivoli Storage Manager)' in them. For example, if you have attached a IBM Ultrium II tape drive to your server, you will see the following:

IBM ULTRIUM II TAPE DRIVE (for Tivoli Storage Manager)
IBM ULTRIUM II TAPE DRIVE

IBM strongly recommends that you use the "for Tivoli Storage Manager" drivers whether or not you are a Tivoli customer to prevent a tape drive from being accessed by more than one process and potentially causing data to be corrupted or lost.
