Check status of analog leased line connection 1

I am having this problem. A Win NT Svr 4.0 machine intermittently has problem transmitting data over an analog leased line to a remote Win 95 machine. Both the machines used US Robotics V.Everything 33.6 leased line modem. Is there a way for me to find out if the problem is not due to the leased line? Can I use the 'ping' command to test? I am not using SLIP or PPP at the moment.

You can use ping to check the connection, but if it doesn't work, it won't tell you if the problem is the line or the machines - all it does is sends a packet of data to the recipent machine, and the recipient sends it back to the originator.

Can you connect them using a dial up line? If dial up works, but lease doesn't it would confirm the line is bad.

I would like to use 'ping' if i could but since both the machines do not have network card, i don't think i can. I believe i need a network card so that i can assign IP address for the 'ping' to work. Do you have a suggestion?

I am not able to use the leased line as a dial-up line.

So which protocol are you using for the connection - can you give a bit more config info?

You certainly shouldn't need a network card to use ping - it's part of tcp/ip.

If you right click the network Icon on the desktop (or go thru ctrl panel) you can check that the dial up adapter is configured - I assume that's what you use for the connection - you would need to make sure it has tcp/ip bound to it, and you can if you want to assign an IP address to the adapter after it's bound.

Have a look at the config info there, and post back.

I am trying to setup a network of two computers installed with Windows NT 4.0 Server OS connected to each other using US Robotics Courier V.Everything leased line modems at each end and an analog leased line between them. Here is how the setup looks like:

Windows NT <--> Modem ================ Modem <--> Windows NT
4.0 Server 4.0 Server

I need to be able to transmit and receive data for both servers using tcp/ip protocol. Since I am using a leased line to connect both servers together, there is no phone number given by the telco. Also, I prefer not to use routers. Do I need to setup RAS on both servers? How can I setup this kind of network?

Even if you are not using IP a quick way to test would be to do a dir command from Dos on a mapped drive from the Workstation to the Server......???? What problem are you experiencing....???? Is it a particular function or random...??? If it is random its most likely the line or cabling of some sort........
