When I attempt to run the Check Disk program
I check the box that indicates to : Automatically fix file system errors
I check the box that indicates to : Scan for and attempt to recover bad sectors
I hit start and I get a message hat reads:

This disk check cannot be performed be cause the disk utility needs rights to some windows files etc. etc Do you want to schedule disk check the next time the PC starts.

I click yes. I restart the PC and nothing happens. No disk check. I seen disk check in Win Xp
It’s a blue screen. I don’t see this. Why not.

Have you tried logging on as an Administrator to see if it makes any difference?

You also may have some third party program running that it is also accessing the hard drive early in the loading of Windows thus preventing ChkDsk from having exclusive control of the drive?

chkdsk wont run
thread779-728738

Scandisk not running on reboot
thread779-860750

You could try launching ChkDsk /r from the Recovery Console.

How to install and use the Recovery Console in Windows XP

Or boot from a boot disk such as Bart PE and run it from the command line against the c: drive

chkdsk c: /f

BigbadBen - you only need the chkdsk c: /r, as the /r assumes the /f flag.

Bert59 - Also realize that chkdsk will take a while to complete. And instead of doing a restart, shut your pc completely down, leave it off for several seconds, then turn it back on. This SHOULD make the OS see that a chkdsk is scheduled to run.

PRPhx,

thanks for the clear up, I knew this already hence the parenthesis...

I can't remember which, but I know one will not work under the Repair Console and you will need the other, and both work under Windows...

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.

LINNEY, THANKS THIS REMEDY WORKED!! See below.

You could try launching ChkDsk /r from the Recovery Console.

However, how do I log on as the Administrator??

Thamks again.

Sorry, if you ran ChkDsk via the Recovery Console you must have logged on (to the Recovery Console) as the Built-in Administrator, am I misunderstanding your question?

Maybe you refer to logging on to Windows as an Administrator, this is done by logging on to a user who has administrative privileges, one which you yourself would have created.

Have a look at the "Run As" command too.

294676 - HOW TO: Enable and Use the "Run As" Command When Running Programs in Windows

Also see "To start a program as an administrator" in the Help and Support program.

The very first line of your first message reads and I quote:

Have you tried logging on as an Administrator to see if it makes any difference?

Again how do I log on as Administrator in Windows. I have seen other PCs that give you an option to do this. Usually you will see a blue screen with the administrator icon and a user icon and one can choose which one to log on with as it pertains to them. You statement seems to imply that if I log on as the Administrator I will be able to get the checkdisk program to work from Windows. Indicating that the Administrator has rights and priviledges that other users dont and this I understand. But how do I get to the screen that show Admin-Icon and user icon. Or will I not see this screen if an Administrator and or user hasnt been created?

My goal is to run Checkdisk from Windows not from the Recovery console, I shouldnt have to run checkdisk from recovery console all the time right??!?

You should NOT have to run Chkdsk from anything other than normal mode, but something must be wrong if you cannot do it from regular mode.

So, we've tried to tell you how to get it done, but a separate issue is why you can't run it from regular mode.

Was your primary question regarding getting it done or knowing why it won't run in regular mode???

bert59,
Check and see what group your in when you turn on your pc. Do you have to use a user name/password?

Anyways, to check to see whether or not you are a part of the admin group do ths:

1) RIGHT click on "My Computer"
2) Click on "Manage"
3) Expand Users and Groups
4) Open up Users
5) Find your user name.
6) Right Click on your user name
7) Click Properties
8) Click "Member of"
9) If your not a member of the Administrators group, click
the Add button
10) In the next dialog box that pops up, type
Administrators and click the Ok button. You are now
an Admin on your pc. You SHOULD now be able to run
chkdsk c: /r from a command prompt.

Also, have your tried starting your pc in safe mode, and trying to get chkdsk c: /r to work? (of course, it will STILL need a reboot).

There are Administrator users, and there are Limited Users, all I was suggesting was that you try as an Administrator user, that being a user you have yourself created who has administrative privileges.

You may be thinking of the built-in Administrator who will only appear on the Welcome Screen via Safe Mode, unless the Registry is tweaked to make it appear in Normal Mode.

I think the reason ChkDsk will not run is that some other process is not allowing ChkDsk inclusive access to the hard drive, which is why it runs from Recovery Console but not from Windows. Do you have Norton or other software such as GoBack, or anything to do with protection of your data on your hard drive etc?
