Chat rooms?

Hi gang

Im creating a web site for our company and I have been asked about a chat room. I am trying to keep everything as thin as possible so I dont really wanna be looking a large thrid party controls or anything like that.

Can anyone tell me a cheap (FREE would be good) and cheerful way of having a fully featured CHAT ROOM on my site please.

I would like it to be as functional as possible (ie users online etc) so any helpwould be great.

What about a forum or messageboard system like this one, rather than a real time chat room?

Can TelNet do it? I know you can access other computer devices on a network, maybe that's a start???
