fellow geeksters,

I want to create a nice working chat application! I've created one using ASP/SQL Server w/ Sessions. The only thing I do not like about my application so far is I've included a Meta-tag to Refresh the browser every 15 seconds so messages can be updated.... And that's kinda ugly! Has anyone any suggestions on making it so that updates are quick and non-flickering???

if someone has the oportunity to download and temp install the current pack for functionality it would be appreciated

also .. i have not tested the code in firefox, netscape, or opera, so far it's been IE only.

Drexor, does the page itself refresh? The reason I ask is because at work our net usage is monitored and chat is most definately banned.

Would this chat prog show up that I have been on the net all day at work?? This would save the phone bill when I need to contact the missus (or more likely when she wants to contact me)

yes and no, the page itself doesn't refresh, the javascript in it requests a chat log from the server every 3-5 seconds and writes the results to the chat window. if you're worried about frequent requests to a web page, this will show up that way.

Update:
new revision of WebChat.zip has been uploaded to :

updates include better javascript handling, consolidation of web functions to a function file, additional smileys added, and (disable-able) audible alerts added.

Also scrolls top to bottom instead of inversed as before, auto scrolls to bottom now as well for new messages.

hopefully soon will be expanding the ability of this to include private messages, private and public "rooms" and user lists in window.

thanks for the support everyone.

forgot to note:

Current zip file contains all files necessary for it to run in 1 cabinet.

installation is:
download file
right click and Winzip Extract To --> <SomeFolder>
Browse to <SomeFolder> and right click and Properties.
Under Properties, select WebSharing, Enable, and give appropriate <WebShare> name.
click ok, and it should be ready to roll.
( MIGHT need to access IIS properties for that virtual share to enable default document of default.asp )

Hello all

I was following along and decided to test on Firefox v1.03.

Works Great

How could I connect it to a real IRC server?

you'd need javascript to handle that completely, search for javascript IRC client or embed
