Does anyone know how to get around the 255 character limit in Access table text fields when linking external Excel files? The problem is that Access keeps cutting off my data in excel at 255 characters even though that Access tells me the field is in memo format (which should support 64,000 characters).

Anyone....Anyone....

I'm afraid you're in trouble. Check articles Q105416 and Q213841 on support.microsoft.com. They describe a similar problem, it boils down to Excel 95 code being used in Excel97 AND EXCEL2000(!). In the first article (about Excel97) Microsoft acknowledges this to be a problem, but in the second one (about Excel2000!) this statement has disappeared.
