Changing the IP address of the DHCP server

Hello all,

I want to migrate the DHCP service on my network to another box which has a different IP address. I'm now OK with the migration procedure but anxious of the fact that the IP address is changing. Does anyone know of any considerations I should be aware of ?

no consequence whatsoever.

dhcp requests are made by broadcast, a client never has the address of a dhcp server before requesting an IP lease.

Not quite the client will keep the IP address of the server it obtained the address from. It will attempt to renew the least from this server until 87.5% of the lease time is reached when it will drop the lease and attempt to get a new address from any DHCP server it can find.

and of course, do not forget to authorize the new DHCP server with active directory

I would stand up the new server, activate it in AD, drop the onl one out, then use VB to force a lease renewal on all clients. This should move everyone to the new server automatically.

I'm not too sure what you mean by using VB? I've got a job in a couple of weeks to replace two DHCP servers and was going to rely on the process that they will try to renew the lease from a server which is no longer there an then get a fresh address from the new servers. I have thought about forcing a release/renew but hand't thought it necessary.

I recommended the forcing once you get the new server in place. This will allow you to see the clients getting their new addresses rather than waiting for its time to expire. I would do it for nothing less than a troubleshooting measure. BTW, here is the vb script I was talking about:
