Hi!

All our SMS components are installed on our Server 1 except the SQL Database (SMS SQL Server) which is located on Server 2.

Now we move the Database to another Server. What things I'll have to do so that SMS will run afterwards without any problems?

Just run SMS Setup and choose "Modify or reset the current Installation" and then change the name of the SQL Server? Is it that easy?

Thank you for any suggestions.

Gerhard

You can move a local SMS site database to a remote server or move the SMS site database from one remote server to another remote server. Moving a remote SMS site database back to the site server is not supported. When moving the SMS site database server, SMS moves the SMS Provider to the same server that the SMS site database is moving to.

The basic steps involve backing up the SMS site database, restoring it to the new computer running SQL Server, running the SMS Setup Wizard on the primary site server, and then running a site upgrade from the SMS CD. For detailed steps, see the section “Changes to Site Configuration, Hardware, and Infrastructure” in Scenarios and Procedures for Microsoft Systems Management Server 2003: Backup, Recovery and Maintenance on the Microsoft Download site.

make sure you recreate the security settings-logins-etc on the new sql server when you move the DB over

then do the site reset

with site reset you mean start the sms setup and say "modify"?

thank you for your help!

This is about an upgrade modification but works the same :-D

2. Insert the product CD into the drive, or connect to a copy of the installation files on a network drive.
3. On the Welcome screen, click Next.
4. Setup detects your SMS 2003 installation. To view your setup options, click Next.
5. On the Setup Options page, select Modify or reset the current installation, and then click Next.
6. On the Setup Installation Options page, select the components that you want to install, and then click Next.

7. On the next three pages, you can make changes to your SQL Server database. The default settings are the settings used for your SMS 2.0 site before the upgrade. On each of the following pages, accept the defaults, and then click Next:
• SMS Service Account Information
• SQL Server Database or Name Modification
• Windows Authentication previously known as Integrated Security for SMS Database
8. On the confirmation page, click Finish.
After SMS Setup installs the components on your site, a message appears indicating that the setup was successful.
