I have got a Proliant 800 that I want to use strictly for one windows based application with a shared drive. I no longer want to use the scsi drives because they were only 4 GB drives anyway. (don't want to spend any money) So I installed an IDE controller and am trying to use a HDD that I have with Win98 on it. The server boots up to it with no problem, but it doesn't show anything in Device manager. I tried to load drivers for the display adapter and network card but it doesn't recognise them. How do I get this server to act more like a PC???

Thanks in advance

There is no support for WIndows 98 on Proliant servers (that I know) so you'd be better off putting NT Server/Workstation on it as there are definately drivers for that operating system. -----------------------------------------------------

It already has NT (server) running on the scsi drives. We are running Novell. If I install NT workstation on the bigger hard drive, how would I connect to the Novell network?

Thanks

If you want an NT Workstation to connect to a NetWare network, you can either use the Microsoft Client for NetWare or alternatively (and probably the better option) download the latest Novell Client from The latest Novell Client for NT is v4.83. -----------------------------------------------------

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Do I need any special settings or anything??

Sorry, I have another question. If I install NT workstation, can I do it on the IDE drive and not use the scsi drives? Would it still recognize the drivers?
Thanks

Certainly would. The company I work for has NT Workstation installed on over 8,000 Fujitsu Siemens PCs across the UK. -----------------------------------------------------

Ok, I finally got around to trying this. (I had to get a copy of NT workstation). I was not sure whether to select NT server or "other" when going through smart start so I tried both. My problem is when it starts to install NT wkstn, it says there is no hard drive installed on the primary controller. (I had removed the scsi adapter and installed an ide) The server knows it's there because I see it recognized during boot process. I can't find anyplace to go in where it will let me change this. Any ideas???

Thanks

I had the same problem could not find solution. Luckley
the client only need win95 for the application to run. It runs on win 95.

We recently took a clients' Proliant 800 PII/350 single cpu server and converted it into a workstation for them as well. I installed Windows XP Professional and the installation went without a hitch. I did upgrade the bios to the latest version. Also, I used the (2) 4GB scsi Disk drives in the system. They perform much better than even current IDE disks in my opinion. They also have a much higher MTBF and sound really cool when they start up.

I ended up using the scsi disks that were in there after all, and installing NT workstation. With a lot of trial and error I finally got it up and running and attached to the Novell network. Hopefully, I won't have any problems with the application I loaded on it.
Thanks for all the input, I appreciate it!
