I think the 30 GIG hard drive on my current computer is going to die at some point in the near future (and it's getting full). Rather than start with a fresh instal on a larger hard drivem I'd rather transfer the contents to a new larger drive so I don't have to reconfigurte everything back to my liking.

1) If I transferred the drive with XP on it to a new (larger) one, will XP think it's being pirated and shut down, requiring me to ask MS to reactivate it?

2) Is there an easy way to perform the transfer (I suspect "copy c: d:" will not be sufficient)?

wolluf,

I got this working again by first installing the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility then using it to "clean up" Word. Then I reinstalled like you suggested, and it worked ! Here is the link to the Microsoft support page for the Windows Installing CleanUp Utility:

Thanks,

Jeff

OK, I performed the copy but encountered problems. I am going to refer to the original Win XP HD as "A", the original data drive as "B", and the new drive as "C". Ultimately, I want the new Win XP HD to be "B" and the new data drive to be "C".

I swapped out "B" for "C" and used Win XP to format "C". No problem!

I replaced "B" and ran the Seagate CD it originally came with to copy "A" to "B". It complained that it couldn't copy some files, specifically that it was unable to open 'System Volume Information\_restore{3C1D5673-48D2...\change.log' and 'PAGEFILE.SYS' on "A" and 'ntldr' and 'ntdetect.com' on "B".

The computer boots fine with "A" and "C" but if I try to boot with "B" and "C" I get an "Error loading OS" message.

I am guessing I need to do something about those four files. Any ideas on what to do next?
