Well I feel pretty dumb about this and I don't want to take this to my IT department and have them laugh at me. I was trying to transfer files from my home computer to my work laptop but couldn't make them see each other. So I changed my laptop settings from domain to workgroup and rebooted. Now I cannot log in at all. If I was local admin this would be no problem but work refuses to let their users be local admins. Anyone know anyway for me to either bypass login or some way to change it back to a domain login.

I can understand that you can't log at all locally , is this correct ? Eng.Mohamed Farid

reboot your computer in safe mode,
no drivers = no login
and then go to you network icon and you should know the rest

let me know if you need more help Knowledge is the first step to Greatness!!!

It gets better. When you try to boot into safe mode (this is what I tried first) the machine wont let you boot in safe mode and automatically reboots. Another anal IT trick I guess :) And to answer the first question. I have no login access at all. My standard account which would log me in if I was still listed as being part of the domain doesn't work and I have no other accounts on the machine

If there is no permission to log in locally ,, I think he won't be able to log in with the Safemode !

anyway ,, tel me if the safe mode workes ! Eng.Mohamed Farid

take the PC then to your IT department ,,
there is some solutions to delete all the users on the machine and to change a lot of options , but I think this is not the safe solution in your choice ,, the most safe thing is to tell your IT the truth , they will not laugh ,, beleive me ! Eng.Mohamed Farid

You are correct. I did manage to actually get the machine to stop rebooting when I tried to enter safe mode by hitting f12(just luck I think) but it still requires you to log in locally. I almost hate to ask it but is there a way to login directly as admin something equiv to booting up a linux box in single-user mode?

No , the Security in your machine stop login locally except for the Admin ,, and the Admin is not you ,,
Some Software can crack the password , but I think it will not work here ! Eng.Mohamed Farid

when the loggin box appears, windows looks at the a: drive for a scpecific bootup, but unfortunately you must a set of specific files to be able to log in without have an account.

the other way is to write a script to look into the ntuser.dat file and read the password but for that you will have to write it yourself.

I will keep looking for a solution to your problem!

It would be a simple thing to take it to IT, because they obviously know the local admin password. The only reason I dont want to wait is that is a long weekend and I was hoping to get some work done. Oh well. If someone does have a throught I will continue to check back in. Thanks for the help folks

Here is another way, remove the hdd from the computer with the problem. Install it in another computer and put as a secondary hdd. Bootup and change the registry settings so you can loggin afterwords and put yourslef as an admin (dont tell this to your IT department).

disadvantage: must have another pc on hand!! Knowledge is the first step to Greatness!!!

Actually kind of hard to do, I have another pc but the one I am locked out of is a laptop. Much bigger can of worms to remove its hd :) If anyone knows of something that can be launched off a disk or something to just promote me so I can make the change that would fix it all.

No that does not work. Looks like I am in for an unproductive weekend.

I doubt your idea GeniuS22 ,, because you can't change the Registry of operating system you are not working on !
if he change anything in the registry , he will change it locally to the operating system which is running , not the registry of the operating system in your hdd !

thanx godness , he can't move his hdd !

sorry for that , but I think there is no way to bypass the login without corruption in some files , the thing which I doubt it ! Eng.Mohamed Farid

Atually you can modify the registry of the secondary hdd
Even if it is not the one you are using (done it before).
try going in as guest(hopefully yout IT dp. didn't disable it) and you might be able to create another user to log in, make your changes and go back with the original.

Let me know Knowledge is the first step to Greatness!!!

Hit F8 during boot up you can see the prompt on the bottom of the screen and try last known good configuration.
