Hi there,

I am about to start building a new windows domain. I will be getting a range of IP addresses in the next few weeks from the colo company we are going to be using. The question is if i go about setting up the domain with a standard private range and then swap the ip addresses at a later date will this mess the domain up?

Don't want to spend days setting up the servers only for the work to be undone when i change the IP addresses. I am guessing i will have to manually update the DNS server settings.

Thanks for your help in advance.

there are two answers. Yes and No...

No if you don't have AD/DNS setup you just have to change your computers to look at the righ tplace.

Yes if you have DNS and IIS and stuff like that. I have changed IPs about a month ago and I still have about 1 or 2 apps a week that are pointing in the wrong location.

Once I changed all the computers to the right location and reinstalled AD it was fine.

So in conclusion try to keep it the same if possible. If not it'd be easier to redo DNS and AD.

anythign else?

as long as you ensure that all your DNS records change to reflect the new ip of that computer especially a server then you shouldnt have a problem. Active directory requires that DNS be correct otherwise it cant replicate. So if you have AD running ensure that your IP changes over in DNS. Ive done it before without having to re-install AD. It requires a little patience and ensuring that you "crossed your t's and dotted the i's"

I don't see the concern here. Do you not have a firewall to use NAT with?

You should be able to use private IP addressing without a need to change it. If your ISP switches IPs on you, then it should only be necessary to change the outside IP of your firewall and then make changes to any public DNS records that may require fixing such as your MX record.

I hope you find this post helpful.
