Is there a way to change the field type in Crystal 9?

I have a databse field with the "can grow" feature enabled in my report. some records are longer than 254 chars. We recently upgraded to Crystal 9 because of 8.5 issue with this limit. However, it is still cutting off the string.

In the field explorer, I clicked on the table, then right-clicked the field, and selected "show field type". The field reads "trade_name_list: String [254]".

How do I get Crystal to change this to enable more than 254 chars? Granted, not all are this long, but plenty are.

Thanks and happy holidays!

Did you do a Database, Verify Database after opening the report in CR9? You may need to save it so that it converts to CR9 format but I suggest you make a copy of the original before you do that. Once you save it in CR9 format, there is no going back to a previous version with that report.

I have saved my original 8.5 files and new 9 files in separeate directories. I have verified the database as well.

What connectivity are you using?

You can try using a SQL Expression to cast it to a varchar of 2000 length and see if that helps.

The problem was caused by settings in the ODBC driver. From within Control Panel, ODBC Data Sources, User DSN tab, PostgreSQL30 configure, Datasource: check "text as LongVarChar" and "Unknowns as LongVarChar". Leave "Bools as Char" unchecked. Last, change Max Varchar from 254. We did this same thing to the PostgreSQL30 listing under System DSN, too.

Once this was done, we closed Crystal and reopened it. Verifying the database leads you through the rest. However, you will have to map table fields if any are Boolean but it solves the problem.

Thanks to those that offered help!
