Changing extensions in WinSPM

Hello there. I just got the a Merlin Magix phone system dumped on me with just about zero documentation. (I have and read the manuals, but...) Anyway, I need to move a few extensions around, but what I've read on this forum doesn't quite work.

The system is in Hybrid/PBX mode.

1) All my extensions are three digits, like 255 or 312, not four like most posts. Does that mean the system is not in "Set Up Space" numbering? What other types are there?

2) When I try to move an extension using the "SysRenumber?Single?Select item?Dial old ext. no.?
Enter?Dial new ext. no.?Enter?Back?Back" method, the phone doesn't change extension. I've tried moving, say, 255 to "312" which is labeled "VACANT" and rings. There is no "313" in the extension list. If I try to move it to that, it also just reverts back to 255.

3) I am using an old version of WinSPM (v5, I believe) but we heard from the local AT&T guy that the newest version will not work with our system, as we will need a new controller or module or something. Does that ring true?

More info: It's a Magix 1.0 v6.0 as reported by *05.

You should do a "PRINT" of the extension directory.

This will tell you what you have.

Also, you can't move an existing extension to an existing extension.

You have to renumber the "TO" extension to something not currently in use.

I have that. We have many extensions that have no label but are assigned to a port/addr. Something like this

1/24 303 N N N N U 3 N

Does that mean I can use the above procedure to move "302" to "303"? Do I have to "delete" ext 303 first?

Sorry if this is a "newbie" question, but my Astrix systems never caused me so much headache. :-/

In the first step, you need to "free" 255 before you can assign it to another port. So just use an unassigned number for the "to" number, example: 255 -> 399. That will "free" 255 so you can assign it to 312 or ? It seems complicated, but just sort of a juggling act with numbers and ports, when moving numbers around between stations. If you have a bunch, make up a little chart to keep track, or just move the cables at the control unit to the ports for the numbers you want to match to the phones you want to move. Although, if the module is a TDL, you will need to recross-connect instead. You have several options, depending on your expertise...

Understood. I was trying to avoid punching down to change extensions for a few reasons:

While the trunk blocks are labeled and in order, the internal wiring is a mess. The blocks are not in any order, the labels on the blocks have zero relation to what is currently on them, and it looks like the previous admin used phone cord to keep some chickens tied to the phone wall.

Also, for some reason, the Merlin Magix seems to eat the sound from the tone generator, so I can't trace lines back to the punch downs. Is that normal?

It only goes to 1/32. Each one only goes to 32.

Try renumbering the first extension to 7100, then the 2nd extension to the 1st old number, then 7100 to the 2nd's old number.

255 to 7100
312 to 255
7100 to 312
