I changed the default static IP on my 4Port DSL Router to a static IP from MY Local Network. Unfortunately when I tried to access the Web Interface through the using (default), I cannot get access to my router.

I tried using (New Static IP) and I still do not have access.

I tried unplugging my router and rebooting it physically by inserting a pin in the reboot section and I still cannot get it to be restored to factory defaults.

Help.

Hey Matt:

Thanks again. I currently have a Linksys DSL 4Port Router.

does it have a console port on the back?
if so. 192.168.1.1 telnet or port.

Hi Mikey:

Thanks for your response. But I am not sure I understand your question. I am not sure about a console port on the back but I am sure that the default IP address is 192.168.1.1. I don't use telnet so it must be a port but I am not sure and today I am on travel so I cannot look at it physically.

Hopefully, my answer above clears things up.

Thanks.

vz1518,

The Linksys 4 port DSL router does not have a console port. To reset the router to factory defaults, you need to hold the reset in until the DIAG light goes on and goes off again. It may take as much as 30 seconds.

Once you have done that, you should be able to access it at 192.168.1.1.

Hope that helps.

The Linksys does not come with a console(DB-9) port. Try to ping that address, PING 192.168.1.1. See if you reply. Changing the Static Address you changed is for the external IP. The internal one must be in the 192.168.x.x subnet for the Linksys product... Thanks,

Thanks Old Man. That sounds like a winner. Will try it this week end and let your know what the results are.

Thanks.

I rebooted the router as suggested but unfortunately it did not release the IP address back to the default. I tried to Ping the 192 address but got destination time out response.

I am about the try all the other suggestions and will report my findings.

Thanks.

vz1518,

If you successfully reset the router (held reset until DIAG light comes on and goes off again) to factory defaults, it's LAN address will be 192.168.1.1. The machine which you are using to ping the router needs to be in the same subnet. In other words, it must have an IP address like 192.168.1.x. If not you will be unable to ping the router.

Are there any other devices (hubs, switches, etc.) between your PC and the router?
What is the IP address and subnet mask of the PC?
Are you using any firewall software on the computer?

Just to clarify your original statements:
* You changed the router's LAN address, correct? Not the WAN address.
* You changed the router's LAN address to 10.10.10.1, correct? You mention that this is an address on YOUR LAN.

Changing the LAN address changes the address of the web gui for the router. To ping the router/access the GUI, you need to use the address set in the LAN address for the router and the computer being used has to be in the same subnet.

Try using the scanner suggested by mattwray. It will give you a lot of information.

To all that Responded:

Thanks for all your advise. I was able to sucessfully configure my router and DHCP Server over the weekend.

The problem was when I changed the Default IP Address (192.168.1.1) I did not include it as an IP in my list of DHCP IPs. So the fix was to use the same range of IPs (192.186.x.x) addresses and reserve IP 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 for the Router IP Address and the Default Gateway respectively.

I then reserve these addresses in my DHCP reservation through the HW MAC addresses. I then gave my DHCP local server a static IP address of 192.168.1.3. I also configured my DNS server including my Assigned ISP's Static IP address and DNS IP. I included them in my Forwarders.

It works like a charm. I can now reserve one of my PCs in the DMZ, etc.

Thanks a bunch guys. To reboot the router and have it returned to factory default was the hardest part.

Thanks.

the old man is good. there is no console port. I thought there was. I dont own one (linksys) just figured there was one. yup. rebooting and starting from scratch is always a good move to learn (although frustrating) the ways.
