We upgraded our DSL to a T1 recently. And of course, our wan IP had to change with the new ISP. Now none of our client computers can access the Exchange server. First it just said it was disconnected. Then I tried reinstalling Outlook on the client and I get the following error: "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window. The set of folders could not be opened."

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Where is your exchange server? If it's local on your network then this really makes no sense... also, what are your DNS settings on the server and a workstation experiencing the problem?

Yeah. It's local.

I came in this morning, and it updated itself fine. Everything works except that I still can't get emails from the outside world. Just our internal world. I'm guessing that now the DNS just hasn't updated world wide yet.

I have DHCP up, so the workstation is on "automatic" for the DNS. The server is using our ISP's DNS for outside authentication.

Odd how? The whole thing is odd to me. It just isn't working, and for no good reason that I can come up with.

In the MX section of the report, does your MX record point to your mailserver on the new IP Address ?

I'm sorry. I'm fairly new to this... I'm not sure what you're asking. MX? what report?

We have a separate group hosting the DNS for the exchange server, and they reset that IP to point to our mail server on Friday.

OH! Sorry... didn't see all of your previous post. The mail test on the site you recommended brought back the new IP. Odd that we are not getting emails through. We can send, but not receive.

Evening again goffron

type in one of your company's eail addresses into the "email test" box on
What result do you get ?

Successful connect: Got a good response [250 2.1.5 paul@xyz.com ]] (took 4.47 seconds) or similar ?

You need to run the Configure Email and Internet Connection Wizard (CEICW -- which is linked as Connect to the Internet in the Server Management Console > To-Do List)if anything on your network has changed.

A visual how-to is here: and a full networking overview for SBS is at

This is the message I get:
Getting MX record for aitc-glulam.org (from local DNS server, may be cached)... Got it!

It returned the correct IP as well! I'm totally confused.

Oh! (TechSoEasy)I did do the Configure Email and Internet connection Wizard first thing after changing the service.

Hang on... further down the page (need to read everything, Ron!) it has this:

Trying to connect to all mailservers:

mail.aitc-glulam.org. - 64.81.96.101 [Could not connect: Could not receive data: Operation timed out.]
[Note that if your mailserver takes over 30 seconds to respond, our test will timeout, even though real mailservers will wait longer]

So basically the world doesn't know where we are...

Looks like I need to verify with the ISP that they gave me the proper IP address?

It just changed. It IS the IP that the ISP gave me in an email. I called this afternoon and verified that the IP they gave me was NOT correct. The IP they gave me to use as my local IP was actually the WAN IP. I still don't understand how that can let the internet access work ...

I corrected the issue with the IPs and called the DNS host to forward the correct IP. So... I'm hoping this will rectify the situation. I should know in about a day.

It still sounds like you don't have everything configured properly if you were having problems locally with Outlook contacting the Exchange server.

If you are still having issues, please post a COMPLETE IPCONFIG /ALL from both the server and a workstation.

Ok... I just verified with our ISP that they gave me the wrong IP! Got the new IP forwarded through the DNS and now things are fine.

Thanks for all your troubleshooting help! It helped eliminate a lot of stuff so that when I called the ISP they could track the problem (bad follow-thru) with ease.
