Change z-index with JavaScript 1

How can I change Z-Index with JavaScript

layername.style.z-index = 10;
This code reports en error message (I assume because it interprets the hyphen as a minus operator)

It is simply zIndex without the hyphen.
layername.style.zIndex = 10;
