We need to change the maintenance user passwords on our VMX-100's. An employee changed the passwords and has since left the company and we have no way to maintain the systems. We do have a password that allows some commands but I can't use the L T command. I need the commands to change passwords and what are the password levels?.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mrfixit262

The password levels for VMX-100 are:

MAINT
ADMIN
REPORT

MAINT is the higest level.

If you have the MAINT level, you may use the command
@PS for port status or @L T (list trace)

These commands are not possible when you have the ADMIN
password only.

The REPORT password only gives you access to low @-commands.
I.e. @L R (list reports) and so on.

I am not aware of what to do if you want to fin the MAINT password. Maybe you will have to ask AVAYA.

Hi again

If you want to change the passwords, here are the commands:

@PASS M MAINT (MAINT will be the password for the MAINT level).
@PASS A ADMIN (ADMIN will be the password for the ADMIN level).
@PASS A REPORT (REPORT will be the password for the REPORT level).

These are default passwords.

Sorry!

The last command is wrong, use:
@PASS R REPORT (REPORT will be the password for the REPORT level).

Hi again

Thanks for the info. We apparently have the ADMIN password but not the MAINT password. I'll have to see what I can do to recover or change the MAINT password.

Thanks again.

I have tried in our lab to see if it would be possible to change the MAINT account, without having the actual psw.
No luck.
The best solution would be to ask your former colleague to give you the MAINT password.
If your system was on VMX/OCTEL 200 or 300, there is a magic button on the CPU board (upper red button), which must be activated, while AVAYA logs on through the build-in modem. This works fine.

So, my best advice would be contacting AVAYA.

We think we have found the problem. I finally got an email from the employee. He thinks he set the MAINT and ADMIN passwords to the same value. I tried resetting the ADMIN password to a different value but it didn't work. I can login with the new ADMIN password but the MAINT password still won't work. I'll keep trying.

Thanks for the help.

Great.
Setting the MAINT and ADMIN to the same value, should give you MAINT access.
But normally we recommend that these passwords should have different content.

Let me know if you solve this issue.
Or let AVAYA help you.

Well, I guess his memory is not what it used to be. I tried all the passwords he could remember but it's no go. I'm guessing he had a typo when he entered the password. I'll see if the manufacturer can be any help.

Thanks again Doktor...

With some software of OCTEL/VMX the connection to the voice mail system should be disconnected for a few seconds to enable new logon.
If the connection through e.g. the modem or direct cable is NOT disconnected, a "real" new logon procedure cannot be done.
