In Windows XP Pro I have changed all of the icons on my home computer with the exception of the "Turn Off Computer" icon. I have the latest edition of Microangelo and know how to use it to make an icon of my choice. The problem is being unable to find the icon to change. Just about all of the other icons I've changed are in Shell32.dll in windows\system32. Does anyone know if I'm missing the icon in question in that file or is it somewhere else? I know this is a trivial question, but will very much appreciate someone helping me locate that icon. Thank you.

Shell32 contains at location 028 the Turn off computer icon, and at 045 the switch user icon.

If you ever find the Green restart computer icon let me know. My guess is that one is in the registry and not in a .DLL or .exe file, but I only spent a little time looking for it as I had an image from one of the many free icon sites you can find with Google.

But if you do find the Restart icon, I would be curious as to where it was buried.

Look in your Program Files, Microangelo folder for muexplor.exe, and click that to explore all the dll and exe files on your system in either \Windows or \Windows\System or \Windows\System32

Including moricons.dll.

But if the icon you want is in an application, either the Microangelo explorer will find it or use the Resource Hacker tool I linked above.

(If you do find the Green restart icon, I would appreciate you telling us where).

BCastner,
Thank you for your suggestions. However, for the first time to my knowledge you missed. In shell32.dll, item 028 is not the Turn Off Computer icon. It is very similar, but not the same entity. I already have Resource Hacker and have used it to modify appearances elsewhere, it was a good suggestion. I changed all the versions of the icon in 028 of windows\system32\shell32.dll but the Turn Off Computer icon remains the same.

I'm afraid that I wasn't specific enough when I posed the original question. It's the Turn Off Computer icon in the Start Menu that I wish to change, not the icon in the pop up window offering Stand By, Turn Off and Restart. Incidently, location 028 does not relate to the Rurn Off icon in the pop up window either.

As for the green Restart icon, its whereabouts remain a secret to us all. I don't know why I manage to get myself involved in such trivial pursuits. It's a bit like the Easter egg hunt, you can't seem to quit when you know that there remains just one unfound egg somewhere.

I did not mean to imply any specific shell32 location icon was being used in fact by XP in any particular Start menu item, only that you could use Microangelo to pull the icon and use it. The icon actually used for shutdown I believe is in logonui.exe.

As for the Restart icon, people swear it is in the file "cool.dll" but I have never seen this DLL.

One often overlooked source of incons is the folder:
c:\Windows\Installer. For example, use Microangelo to look in:
C:\WINDOWS\Installer\{90190409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9}

BCastner,
Thank you, I'll check it out and let you know what I find.

Dear BCastner,
No luck. according to Microangelo, logonui.exe contains no icons. Cool. dll and 90190409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0050048383C9} do not reside in my computer.
I will look through the c:\windows\installer folder to see if I can find what I'm looking for.

Use Windows Explorer first to look at the folders; for example under Installer.

You might have to copy the icon files out to a temporary directory, as Microangelo (at least mine) cannot see icons in folders that are more than one level deep.

I'm not looking at the folders, I'm looking at the individual files.
