Does anyone know how to change the default name of Excel Spreadsheets?
For some reason the Default name on my server when opening Excel is Book2 and I need it say Book1.
There are no other Spreadsheets open at the time and it still says Book2.......
Does anyone know how to fix this????
Thank You In Advance! =o)

Search your hard drive for folders names XLSTART. Anything in them?

Search your hard drive for book2.xls. Where does it reside?

When you first open Excel, is Unhide available from the Window menu? Anne Troy

Dreamboat.....thx 4 your reply

XLSTART is empty
Book2.xls and Book1.xls doesn't exist
Unhide is disabled...

Dreamboat...

I reset the registry and when Excel starts it still starts up as Book2....uhmmphhhhh

Thanks for your time...

No prob.

Are you viewing all files on your PC? (Windows Explorer has a setting for it.) I'm just double-checking about a book 1 being in XLSTART.

Oh!! Tools-Addins. Anything checked? Anne Troy

Dreamboat.....Yes, I'm viewing all files
XLSTART is empty...
Nothing is checked in Add-Ins...

How silly is this...???

Thanks again for your time....If you think of anything else let me know....I keep asking everyone I know and nobody knows...

Try renaming or deleting the excel.xlb file found under C:\<your profile>\Application Data\Microsoft\<either Templates or Excel>

Or do a search for Excel.xlb. It's the equivalent of the normal.dot for Word. It'll recreate itself if renamed or deleted. Then launch Excel and see if you're still Book2 or if you're back to Book1.

Out of curiosity, why does it matter? Don't you save to another name anyway?

Ok, here's some news...
The .xlb file didn't exist.
I copied that file from my PC onto the server (that's where the problem is, on the server)
That didn't change anything.
I then logged off the server and logged on with a different userName and when I start Excel Book1 comes up but Book2 still comes up with the other log in ID.

As to why this silly problem matters....one of the programmers wrote a VB app that opens an existing spreadsheet and starts a new Excel spreadsheet and in his code he references Book1 for the new Excel spreadsheet before he saves it under a new name(at the end).......isn't that ridiculous...

So does anyone have any other suggestions to get rid of the Book1 Book2 problem aside from changing his code?

If you already have Excel open, and you renamed Book1 to something else, there is no way Excel is going to open another instance of Book1 in the same session, unless there is a way in VBA (and that means changing your code).

Would it not have helped if the macro had been mentioned in the priginal post?

Actually the application really doesn't have an effect at all. If I start up Excel, manually, without any code running at all, Excel starts up at Book2....that's what I originally said...and that's where the problem lies....

Apologies for asking this again...did you try the PC cleanup?

Go to Tools, Add-ins and see if you have an Add-in named Book1. Also, might be a good idea to uncheck all the add-ins. Try opening Excel again. If it opens on Book1, start adding the add-ins one-by-one and see which one causes the problem.

xlhelp.....thank you but i did do that already....nothing is checked off in Add-Ins.....
