Dear Guys,
I am new to windows 2000 could you kindly help me……
I am a technician in a Univ. Recently our department have purchased 20 new computers brand new with windows 2000 professional already intalled on it.
We have created two account one for students and one for administrator.
We have installed trial version of softwares from the administrator account….however when the students logs in and tries to use the software…….
Win2000 professional promts that only administrator and power users have the rights to use this software.
You would definitely agree..that we cannot place the students with administrative rights…..
Does anyone have a solution for me…..thanks in advance.

Hi
1. First change the student as an administrator. (Log in as admin and then do this)
2. Login as student
3. INstall the trial software.
4. Then Login Again as admin and change the student to user level.

This way the students get the software available ! ramani :-9

LET KNOW IF THIS HELPED. ENOUGH EXPERTS ARE HERE TO HELP YOU OUT! BEST OF LUCK :)

Dear ramani,
Thanks for your prompt reply, I tried what u said but it does not work.
When the student logs on ..it again prompts that “u must have admistrative rights to try this software”…
Is it not obvious that once you revert back to the user groups all administrative rights are lost??
Kindly give me another solution..or any other way…is there no way of “assigning rights to application in windows 2000!!”….
Thanks in advance.

Sounds like the software is trying to read/write a registry key that is not avail under the normal user rights. Probably only the software vendor could help you with this one.

Hi Ramani,
Try adding the User to the Local User Group "poweruser" on the PC. This gives writeaccess to some part´s of the Registry that the user normally couldn´t access.
Maybe this helps. If not, try using the regmon and filemon Utilities from ( They are free, an about the best tools i know !) , to find any kinf of access Problems that you get while starting up that application. Maybe that gives us a hint..

Good Luck,

Rainer Schlosshan

Firstly, tell us what software it is. Make sure its Win2K compatiable, and then make sure that it is certified to work with multiple users/network conditions.
If so, contact Microsoft or ideally, the software vendor.

Thank u all for your prompt reply.....

Users are prevented from making accidental or intentional system-wide changes. Thus, Users can run certified applications, but not most legacy applications.

A clean installation of the new OS onto an NTFS partition creates file system permissions designed to prevent users from compromising the integrity of the operating system and installed applications. Users can’t modify settings on operating system files or program files, and can only install applications that can be run by themselves (if they’re provided access to the file system) and not by other users.

“Power Users” may install applications for use by others (this eliminates the need for an administrator to do so, or for us to give users administrative privileges on a machine just for this purpose.) A Power User’s default settings are backward-compatible with NT 4.0 user settings. Power Users can install any application that doesn’t install system services.

You could try adding everyone to the permissions and resricting them to read execute

I know this is a really late reply but I thought I might throw it out there. Go to Start|Run type regedt32 and hit ENTER. Then highlight the window HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE on Local Machine.

Then go:

HKEY.......software\FLASH5(or whatever that sofware package is) highlight that folder and go to the menu bar and choose security|permissions and grant the EVERYONE group full control!

This should work...let me know if it doesn't.

Adios :)
