Looks like many of us are in the same boat, the IT person in charge leaves, and everything gets dropped on our laps. Because of my background with Avaya Definity PBX's, the boss felt that I was qualified to take over. So here it is. We have a Norstar Plus Modular ICS. It turns out that two trunks cards (NT7B7SGD) need to be replaced by two Call ID cards to enable CLID on only 5 telephones. My questions is, how do you associate the extension number to the line number? Doing "feature * 0 and Int" gave me the line number. Of the 5 telephones, the lowest line number is 080 and the highest number is 125. The stations have 4-digit extension numbers and one if them is 2221. Looking at the install and adming manuals does not details how to determine which trunk card or station card (ports) goes with what station. I am confused because the books mentions lines, and line ports ...what is the difference?
Also, what should I look for when replacing the loop start trunk cards with the call id cards? Does the KSU and/or the expansion modules need to be powered down? Will the system automatically recognize the new cards as call-id cards? I am still reading the manuals as the cost of going to school is a bit too much for my boss to bear. I would appreciate any help you can give. One last thing, I know we are not to solicit and that is not my intent, but do any of you guys live in the Houston area? I am not looking for vendors, just a fellow tekkie. Thanks.

There are many things involved. For instance depending on the software version, there are different ways to make the CLID appear on the sets. Your best bet is going to be to find a vendor who works on Norstar for a living.

I can't be sure of the release because the office won't open until Tuesday, which is the day the change is scheduled for. Users won't be back in until the following Monday morning which gives me a little time to "play with it" and correct errors if they aoccur. What are some of the things involved if the system happens to have the latest release? Or the release before that? Please don't think me unkind, but can anyone provide a scenario of what he/she would do, other than suggest a vendor which would be a luxury if you know our budger, that can help. Please review my original questions for background. Again, your assistance will be greatly appreciated.

It's not that simple. Norstar has changed the way you program certain things on certain software versions. Not knowing what version you are running doesn't help you either. It would be too much too list the differant ways to program what you want. Replacing the cards are easy, they will come up. The caller id programming is where the problem lies. You must be familiar with proramming a Norstar to know how to determin what phones will be changed and where. You may not even need to replace both cards, if the lines are on the same card.
Having a vendor who knows your system is not a luxury, it is an investment.
You really need to ask yourself can i do this without Tek Tips.

Sir, quite frankly you need a qualified professional.

Make sure Caller ID was actualy ordered on those lines with Telco.

You state the reason you don’t want to hire a professional is due to your boss’s budget concerns. A professional can have this project completed for you in two hours MAX. On the other hand you could spend 20 hours trying to figure it out, and even after trying, you still may not get it to work the way you want. So ask your boss which is cheaper: a professional working for two hours with the system configured correctly; or you for who knows how long with the system possibly worse off than when you started.
