Has anyone used the Centurion Guard chip to protect their computers? I work in an educational facility that is looking into the possibility of purchasing the chip for security in the labs. We have one for demo purposes and have been very impressed with its capabilities. I'm interested in info from other locations that may be using the chip for security purposes in a lab environment and what their successes/problems with the chip have been. Thanks...

I'm sorry I only responded with more questions. The chip is new to me. Could you descibe it? What are its features? I am very interested hardware security solutions.
Please post your question in the General Security Discussion forum. Thanks.
Well, I didn't find the General Security Discussion Forum, would be happy to post there once I do...Anyway...The "chip" attaches to the floppy drive cable and is controlled by a key inserted in one of the expansion slots, there really isn't to much to it at all. The first thing you have to do is install the software and create a "reserve" partition (after the system has been set up the way you want). This takes less then 3 minutes. Once the software is installed you install the hardware and reboot the system. Once this is all done, all you have to do is turn the key to lock the system. I'm telling you, this has got to be one of the best things I've ever found. I installed it on my system and let some co-workers have at it and they couldn't break it. We have a computer labs and this will be a great security addition if we can sell it to the school. Students can literally do anything they want to a system and when it reboots the system is back to its original configuration. It even goes as far as protecting the floppy for booting purposes so security can't be bypassed. We have also been testing it with Ghost and having great sucess there as well. The URL for the company is <A HREF=" TARGET="_new"> So far, from what I see, its the best thing since sliced bread..:)

The description sounds very much like a product called "HDD Sheriff" from JungSoft. I'm going to check out Centurion and compare the features.
Thanks for the reply!
Oh, General Security Discussion is in the MIS area.

I did work at a college, ivcc.edu that uses it. Had good result.

LadyH,

It has been awhile since you posted this thread but I was specifically looking for information about the centurion Guard. From what I understand it is a wonderful product. We have requested an evaluation copy for the PC side or our house, but do you know of anything we can use on the Mac side of the house? Centurion Technologies does not have anything in the works for Mac. do you have any suggestoins?

Yes, CG is a WONDERFUL product. But, unfortunately, i cannot give you any info for the Mac side. I am not a Mac Tech and would almost rather cut off my fingers then become one (LOL)...However, our Mac tech has learned that a CG for the Mac is in the works, but no idea when it could be available. Currently I believe he is using options available in the OS for security and a software package call Assimilator to replace/correct messes students make on the lab systems. We have not moved to OS X at this time because the college doesn't want to pay for the OS X server that would be needed to maintain security. The Assimilator program is not OS X compatible and until either something else is available or the college gets the OS X server, this is what they will be staying with (OS 9, latest updates)...
