...sounds to me like you need to make use of paragraph indents, go to style > formats, adjust the right and left input fields to equal values, then justify your text as normal...
Thanks -- but that's not it. In your example, the text in each column is centered, not justified. I want the edges of my columns to come out straight -- like a newspaper. But -- I want entire text to be centered, left to right, within the box.
...justified text is the bottom left icon in the measurements palette, there is also a forced justified option which will force the last line of text across the set indents, although this will in most cases stretch the text unpleasantly...
...you can also set paragraph justification in the formats dialogue whilst setting the indents...

I think if you just use justify for the text you will have the two columns centered within the text box as in a newspaper with zero indent.
You can also go to Item, Modify, Text and use multiple indents on the text box itself, maybe that will give you what you want since I still am not sure exactly what you want.
