I'm creating an table, but due to the length of some of the lines, the cell in the next column is much longer than I want. How do I change the height for just one cell in a table, and not the cells adjacent to it? Thanks, Susan

this may need nested tables - can you post some of your code as an example please Tony
reddot.gif WIDTH=400 HEIGHT=2 VSPACE=3

This is really embarrassing, but I'm just using Word to write this. I actually, just stretched out the columns to make them even, but if there is another way, I would love to know. I have Site-Aid, so I can code directly in there. I made a one row table in Word, with the problem. Thanks for your help. Here is the code it generated:

Hi,
I don't even want to try to look at that code! I used to use word, also. Switching to TextPad-- made my code a LOT easier to read!

To answer your question, do this:

<table>
<tr>
<td>I'm the top left</td><td rowspan=&quot;2&quot;>I'm the top and bottom middle!</td><td>I'm the top right</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>I'm the bottom left</td><td>I'm the bottom right</td>
</tr>
</table>

Rick It's a pleasure to know that I've helped you. If I have,
please click the link below to let me know. :)

Thanks, but this is actually the opposite of what I needed, though I appreciate your trying to help! Here is what I want:

Cell one Cell Two Cell Three
Part of One Cell Four Cell Five
Cell Six

Instead of:

Cell one Cell Two Cell Three
Part of One
Cell Six Cell Four Cell Five

Susan

Works fine for me, just make sure you have enough contents to fill 2 lines or it may look funny.

<table>
<tr>
<td rowspan=&quot;2&quot;>1<br>1</td>
<td>2</td>
<td>3</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>4</td>
<td>5</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td colspan=&quot;3&quot;>6</td>
</tr>
</table>

Rick It's a pleasure to know that I've helped you. If I have,

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I took your sample and played with it. Here is what I got (it isn't pretty):

<table>
<tr>
<td>1 Receiving and processing</td>
<td rowspan=&quot;2&quot;>2 Processing budget<br>
amendments</td>
<td rowspan=&quot;5&quot;>3 Creating a new purchase<br>
requisition for a <u>catalogued</u> <br>item not <br>requiring <br>competitive bidding</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>4</td>
<td>5</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>6</td>
<td>7 this is another test</td>
</tr>
</table>

Look at this; is it what you want?:

<table border=&quot;1&quot;>
<tr>
<td>1 Receiving and processing</td>
<td>2 Processing budget<br>
amendments</td>
<td rowspan=&quot;2&quot;>3 Creating a new purchase<br>
requisition for a <u>catalogued</u> <br>item not <br>requiring <br>competitive bidding</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>4</td>
<td>5</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>6</td>
<td>7 this is another test</td>
</tr>
</table>

--Notice &quot;1.&quot; is centering vertically in the cell. To stopp this, put extra <br>'s at the bottom of the text to padd it.

Rick It's a pleasure to know that I've helped you. If I have,
please click the link below to let me know. :)

Nope. But I don't think one can accomplish what I want. I want cells 4 and 5 to be directly under 1 and 2. When I put in the <br> to make 1 and 2 line up with 3, then there is a lot of space between cell 1 and cell 4. See, like this:

Cell1 Cell2 Cell3
Cell4 More Cell5
Cell2

But it's ok, I'm going to just shorten the wording <grin>.
Thanks for your help. Susan

Well, you can shorten if you like, but remember this, in HTML/css there is always a way to do it. If you post a list like this, I can make it for you.

cell1 cell2 etc. in the places you want them.
cell3 cell2

and then a list like this:

cell1=a bunch of text
cell2=more text
etc.

I'm just not understanding what text you want and where to put it. If I knew, it would be really easy to make.

Hi Susan,

Can I put in my two penneth worth? Go back to Word, create your table and merge the cells, adjust the height, width, colour, padding, alignment, borders or whatever. Then save as HTML. Then you can go to Site-Aide or whatever it is and tweak your settings if necessary. Some things will not convert across to HTML but the table layout definitely will.

Of course, wading through all that terrible code Word puts in can't be much fun.
:)

I thought my example showed what I wanted, but I guess it doesn't. I cannot explain it better :(. It's not that the cells need merging, it's that the adjacent cells and the ones in the next row should move up, as if the middle cell wasn't there (if the middle is the one with multiple lines). Like this:

Cell1 Cell2 Cell3
Cell4 More Cell5
Cell2

Notice that Cell2 takes up three lines, but Cell 1, 3, 4, and 5 are in their proper place with no extra spaces between cell1 and 4, etc. And cells 1 and 3 are even with the first line of cell2.

I guess I need to give up, since I can't seem to explain what I want adequately. I also think it can't be done.

I did put the code into SiteAid and play with it. Still, there is lots of space between cells 1 and 4, and 1 doesn't really line up evenly with 2.

I appreciate all of the help you guys have tried to provide.

Thanks,
Susan

Not quite sure if this is what you require but have a look!

<table width=&quot;496&quot;>
<tr>
<td>I'm the top left</td>
<td rowspan=&quot;3&quot; valign=&quot;top&quot;>I'm the top and bottom middle!</td>
<td>I'm the top right</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>I'm the bottom left</td>
<td>I'm the bottom right</td>
</tr>
<tr>
<td>&nbsp;</td>
<td>&nbsp;</td>
</tr>
</table>

Hope this helps!

If it still isnt right perhaps you could draw us a piccy of how you want it to look which might be easier to understand. Nick (Web Developer)

nick@retrographics.co.uk

Nick,

That is EXACTLY what I wanted! :) Now, if I can just figure out how to get rid of all the garbage Word puts in, and just simplify the table.

In Tony's example, cell 2 is centered lower, rather than being even with the top line of cell 1 and 3, so it's close, as were previous help emails, but having it even is exactly what I hoped to accomplish.

I'm so happy to see that this can be done! I just have to keep practicing this, cause the table is HUGE!

Thanks,
Susan

Hi
I think the answer to your problem is right in the code that Word generated, e.g. for a table cell
<td width=292 valign=top style='width:218.65pt;border:none;border-right:solid windowtext .5pt;padding:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt;height:.75pt'>

See that height style parameter? You can change that to whatever you want, not just .75pt. To double it, use 1.5pt. You'll have to use a text editor like Notepad, not Word, to change the code. Wading through the code made by Word is a pretty daunting task, but don't forget you can use the Search function in Notepad to find the table cell you want. Just search for the text displayed in the cell.
Also, you will need to use the rowspan parameter as suggested by others before me.

happy coding!
Ken (web developer)

I found a site that is just using side-by-side lists to create the effect I want! However, I have no clue how they got rid of the bullet. Here is the site:

Does anyone know how to get rid of the bullet? I've been searching online, but the only instructions I see are how to change the bullet, not hide it.

Thanks, Susan

How about something like this then?

Code:
<TABLE COLS=2 WIDTH=500 CELLSPACING=0 CELLPADDING=5 BORDER=0>
<TR VALIGN=TOP>
  <TD WIDTH=250>
  <P>Here is some text</P>
  <P>Here is some text Here is some text Here is some text Here is some text</P>
  <P>Here is some text</P>
  <P>Here is some text</P>
  </TD>
  <TD WIDTH=250>
  <P>Here is some text Here is some text Here is some text Here is some text Here is some text Here is some text Here is some text Here is some text</P>
  <P>Here is some text</P>
  <P>Here is some text</P>
  <P>Here is some text</P>
  <P>Here is some text</P>
  </TD>
</TR>
</TABLE>
to amend the site you mentioned above, you can remove the bullets by removing these bits from the code:
Code:
<UL>
<li class=&quot;catlist&quot;>

</li>
</UL>
