Do any of you know what cell phone provider will display name on cell phone calls made to landlines? My providers Verizon and AT&T Wireless say this is not possible, however I've seen cell phone caller ID on my home and cell phone and they were not in any pre-programmed database on my phone.

My Sprint PCS phone used to, but it stoped showing up about 2 years ago. At about the same time I noticed I stopped getting them from other users (getting cellular call instead).

Most annoying.

At the time I had assumed it was some nationwide change to the SS7 signalling network. It is a function of the carrier not the specific handset.

I tried to complain to the FCC but got stonewalled. I also tried to complain to Sprint which was useless which is par for them.

I'll be very interested to follow this thread.

Verizon Wireless once told me that, for security purposes, they will not pass along any names for Caller ID purposes. They do pass along the calling cellphone's number though.

My friend will verify but they think it was a T-Mobile cell phone passing caller ID Name & Number to the landlines.

I know on Verizon & MCI PRI's my cell phone numbers(Verizon & T-Mobile) show up as Caller ID.

I received verification that calls from (at least this one) T-Mobile cell phone to landlines will appear with both number and name. I saw it with my own eyes - I can't understand why Verizon Wireless would say that it's not possible or why there would be security issues, (if we requested the service).

Hmm, I am 99% sure that I have not received a caller name from a cell phone for several years.

Plus I am fairly certain I stopped seeing them from others at about the same time mine stopped showing up. Perhaps the change was at my LEC rather than with the cell phone provider.

Reading the above I am beginning to think this theory just might explain it.

I guess I need to find someone who is able to receive them and then try calling from my cell phone.

If this IS the case this is good news since I can go to the utlities commision and complain that my "Caller ID with name" service has been deliberately downgraded by the LEC.

Can't wait to learn more and then follow through :)

I take a lot of inbound calls on my landlines from Cell phone users across the country, and the majority of the calls DO show name and number. A few show number only, and a very few show up as "WIRELESS CALLER" only. I will try to remember to ask the callers who they are using for a provider when the info. does not show up.

There is another factor that comes in to play--name is 'retrieved' by the RECEIVING telco. If that receiving telco doesn't have a billing arrangement with the sender (in this case your wireless provider), then they won't display a name, even if it is available. SBC and Verizon are in a spat about just such billings in the KC area I'm told.

If what jgideon says is true (and this seems plausible) then I may put in a complaint. I have a monthly recurring charge for caller ID with NAME and by golly they should provide it whenever it is technically possible. I could care less about who pays for it, I am paying for it and it does not work!

Clearly it is technically possible because it used to work and it works for others.

I am going to wait a bit to learn more before I file a complaint. Besides, I hate to hassle my CLEC since I know that they are simply reselling SBC lines and have no control over the problem.

I suppose I could complain about my wife's line, that one is an SBC line.

It might be fun to get everyone I know that subscribes to Caller ID with name to file complaints the same week! heehee.

But I need to confirm the details first.

Let us know when you're ready I'm on board to complain!

Just found some more info. on this the hard way.
1 week ago, I installed a phone system with PRI from SBC. All inbound calls showed name and number across the PRI.
This weekend, I installed the exact same type of system with PRI, but behind a diferent telco provider. On this system, instead of the actual name, I get "Wireless Caller" instead of the actual name for cell phone calls.
SO: It looks like the cell phone providers are sending it out, but it is not always being passed from Telco to Telco.

I have confirmed on a different forum that the name is "looked up" by the terminating CO from the calling party number just as jgideon says. If the number is present they could look it up.

Therefore, I intend to report this to SBC as a failure in my "caller ID with name service". When they claim they can't or won't fix it I will politely demand they give me the phone number of the Public Utilities Commision of Ohio (and when they say "duh" I'll inform them they are required to give me this and to ask their supervisor for number). That should get me a supervisor. If the still can't or won't accept responsibity I'll report them to the PUCO. I'll be sure to mention in my complaint that they closed the ticket without resolving the problem.

I should then get a definitive answer from them (I will demand a written reply). Once I have on record their refusal to fix this, and their supposed rational, I will contact some lawyer friends and see if the idea of a class action suit causes $ signs to flash in their eyes.

Particularly since this USED TO WORK I think that the fact they changed their service without notifying their customers (or most likely the PUCO) should make this interesting.

Toni269 I hope you will do the same as well as others.

sic em!
