What is the difference between a Celeron and a P-4 processor? And how does the XP-M compare to the two?

Ive always found say a 2.2ghz Celeron chip to be slower than a 1.8ghz Athlon now i dont know anything about 'M's' but IMHO a celeron clocked at a higher speed can quite often run slower than a lower clocked athlon.

I believe the Pentium M processor is for Mobil computing (i.e. notebooks.) A 2 Ghz P4 processor will walk all over a 2 Ghz Celeron processor. A better comparison would be between an AMD XP 2 Ghz processor vs a P4 2 Ghz processor. Performance tests between the two are very close, depending on whose doing the testing. But a celeron can't compete with a Pentium 4.

Mobile P4's and Athlon Mobiles around the 2.4 rated mark are very similar in performance (not a massive differance)
On the other hand Celerons perform extremely badly in comparison.
To put this into contect, a desktop 2.4 Celeron is easily out performed by AMD's budget Duron 1.4!!!
I have to be honest and say I don't know if this applies to the mobile Celeron but I believe the story is the same there as well??

Thanks for your input. I have to have a serial port and XP Pro on my notebook, so that narrows it down to a Dell Latitude. With this info I was able to convince my boss to spring the extra $100 to up it from a 1.2 Celeron M to a 1.4 Pentium M.

HP makes a notebook with a serial port, however they won't put XP Pro on it. Go figure.
