Cel Shading look?

Hi,

I'm trying to get the Cel Shading look a'la:

using Illustrator CS2. I've got the outlines OK, I just need to know the easiest/best technique for coloring in the various skin shades.

Live Paint would work, but I'm sure this was done in Illustrator earlier than a few months ago?

What I'm looking for is technique. I played around with duplicating layers, splitting via pathfinders, coloring each section, repeating... very inefficient.

I'm relatively new to Illustrator (having been a Photoshop guy for the last decade) and would like to hear some "tips & tricks".

Doesn't seem to be very many Illustrator tutorials out there (compared to Photoshop anyway), and the ones out there I do find are just plain bad - like this:
