Recently we started to run into problems exporting reports from CE9/eportfolio to Excel. This function used to work fine but since we've added a few more reports, it seems to have stopped working altogether. Here is the error:

There was an error retrieving data from the server: File I/O error. File ...

There are less than 12 reports and no more than 5 instances of each.

Thanks in advance for you help.

Also, when I change the format to Excel via CMC and run it, the instance fails with the following:

The request could not be submitted for background processing. File C:\Program Files\Crystal Decisions\Enterprise 9\Data\procSched\.....

Kflaw -
Did you intentionally truncate the error messages you posted? What you left out may help someone see the cause of the problem.

Yes I did. The remainder of the message only contained the temporary file name created like ~tmp3783hdjhd87s8sj.rpt

When you set the format in the CMC, do you also run it from the CMC to get the "background processing" error? And if so a tmp filename from the Input File Repository?

Does your Event Viewer indicate any other system or application error messages from the same time? Is there enough space on your ce server? (What OS? How are your CE components distributed?)

The file i/o error was being generated from the export to excel option within the DHTML viewer. The background processing error was being generated when the report ran on the scheduler.

I upgraded the server to CE9 sp2 this morning and found this in the eventviewer: Plugin CrystalEnterprise.Excel is corrupted, and it has been reinstalled.

Oddly enough, I can now export to excel. I also increased the cacheserver size and found a problem with the report itself. Recently the report was changed to use a mssql storedproc to drive a crosstab instead to a view. When refreshing the report through CR9 it would just kill CR. Something to do with the crosstab. I recreated it and it now appears to be working fine.

Thanks.

Why would it be odd that replacing a corrupted excel plugin would allow exports to excel to start working again? That's where I was going with the file error questions, but I didn't know what name to expect for the plugin - or if you would even see its name in an error message. Also, I should have mentioned the Event Viewer in my first post.

But you're back up again. Congratulations!

Only a little sarcasm with that reference. Prior to the upgrade the eventviewer showed nothing.
