It could be a bad CDR or you do not have the dip switch set correctly. While your system is coming up. Enter ther setup menu for the
BIOS and make sure the CDR is on the secondary. If change the enter to reflect the
CDR. If it does not see it the CDR is BAD!
I think hotpoint is talking about CD media problems (CDRW and CDR disks). Apparently the CDRewriter is connected correctly, otherwise he/she wouldn't even be able to read CDRW disks.
hotpoint,
Is this a blank CDR that you're trying? If so, can Nero see that? Have you tried different brands? What kind of CDR are you trying to make?
I agree with cdogg that it is probably the type of cdr. Try and buy a better quality one. A gold cd (when you look underneath not the printed side) would be a better one to try as they are better quality then green cds. I assume the drive works just reading normal cds? eg. bought games, programs etc.
Hope you got it worked out.

I stand corrected my error. You can not let InCD software start at boot. If it does
it hogs the CD writer and only looks for CD-RWs.
Go into msconfig and uncheck the InCD software.
start>>run>>msconfig select startup tab
reboot
then you should be about to see either CD-R CD-RW
InCD treats the CD writer as another fixed disk and that is why it is only lookings for CD-RWs
