A couple of months ago we reimaged all of our machines to move them to a new domain and since then our users haven't been able to burn cds using the built in XP burning. They worked fine before, and the setup is the same.

I originally thought that maybe a windows update had caused it, but I tried it on a fresh machine before any updates where installed with no luck.

If you go to the drive properties it doesn't have the recording tab. I can hack the registry to get that back, but then when I try to burn anything it doesn't recognize the blank cd.

I checked what driver it is using and it is a generic cdrom driver. I checked IBM and the manufactures web site but couldn't find a drives. I did find a firmware update, but that didn't correct the problem.

After hacking the registry to get the recording tab back you can burn with third party software (ie nero) but we don't have enough licenses for everyone.

The machines are IBM Netvista 8307-NYU and the burner is an LG GLE-8481B. We are having the same problem with our laptops which leads me to believe is an issue with Windows.

Thanks in advance.

Kenny

Thanks for the reply.

That article describes the registry hack I used to get the recording tab to come back. It recognized the burner then but when I try to burn a cd using XP's builtin utility it doesn't recognize and blank cds.

Tried that as well with no luck. Those keys didn't exist at that location.

Is there any access problems with the CD Burning folder?

C:\Documents and Settings\Usernamexxxx\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

Can they Erase a CD with XP?

Is the Imapi CD Burning service disabled?

What error message are you getting, and is there any help in the Event Viewer?

We actually redirect the burning folder to another place, but that part works fine. I just tried to erase a disk and it doesn't give me an option since it doesn't recognize the disk. The IMAPI service isn't disabled. The eventlog doesn't show any errors it does have information saying:

The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service was successfully sent a start control.

The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the running state.

The IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service service entered the stopped state.

It does them over and over again when I try to do anything to do with the burner.

Thanks again for the reply.

kjseever,

I read your reply above. Can you test a machine that is not redirecting the burning folder to another place but doing as a standalone machine would do?

I read all these comments from various articles and just wonder if it is not part of your problem.

Some more MSKB articles about the Staging Area and the file "Cd burning stash file.bin" .

Description of CD-ROM Recording in Windows XP
279157
Description of the Staging Area.
To facilitate CD recording, Windows XP uses a staging area to store the data for recording, which is located in the following hidden folder:
Drive_letter:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

In addition, the information in the staging area is copied to a monolithic disc image file before you record the data. By default, this file is named "Cd burning stash file.bin" and is located in the root folder. You can change the location of the file in the CD recorder Properties dialog box.

The "Write to CD" Option is Available While Copying Files to the Staging Area
300779
The process of copying large amounts of data to the CD-ROM temporary files area may take several minutes. During this time, the option to Write To CD is available and can be clicked. However, if you click this option, the CD copy operation may not succeed and may create an unusable disc.

Files May Be Lost During CD-ROM Creation if You Drag and Drop Files into the Staging Area
301480
The write functionality of the staging area is not disabled after the CD-ROM creation has begun. Because of this, any data that is written to the staging area after the CD-ROM creation is started will not be written to the CD-ROM and will not be saved after the process is finished because they were not included in the list of files to write to the CD-ROM.

Create Shortcut Command Is Missing When You Right-Click and Drag an Item in CD-Burning Staging Area
307146
The items in the Staging Area are not the actual files to be copied. They are shortcuts to the files, which are actually stored in a different location. Making a shortcut to a file in the Staging Area would just create a shortcut to a shortcut.

Cannot Copy Files to the CD-R/CD-RW Drive
326982
This behavior occurs because the IMAPI CD-Burning COM service is set to Disabled. By default, the IMAPI CD-Burning COM service is turned off in Windows Server 2003 because this service is not considered a critical service on a server.

InCD from Nero has been known to be a problem in various ways in XP.
To Clean up after InCd you might need this tool from Nero.
InCd-Cleantool_1140.exe

What is the CD drive letter, has that changed since imaging?

Have you a Reg Key and value like this in existence?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer
value of NoCDBurning.

I tried it as an administrator, since they don't have redirected folders, and it still didn't work. Right now none of the machines have any third party software on them. The drive letter stayed the same through the reimaging. Also that reg key isn't there. I originally thought that might be causing it too.

Thanks again

What's different about the image you used? Anything? Was it created from a working configuration? Did you apply anything to the image after restaging the PC's?

Just for the heck of it, I would:
1) Remove the drive from Device Manager
2) Shutdown
3) Disconnect the drive from the IDE cable and reboot.
4) After verifying that any remnants of the drive aren't showing in Explorer or Device Manager, shutdown.
5) Reconnect and reboot

There is some configuration or driver that is just not right here. This is shown clearly by the IMAPI service stopping as you indicated above.

This little utility is worth a shot. While not appearing exactly on point, it does do a nice job of resetting all registry entries related to the CD Drives. From the Microsoft Shell Team, Autofix:

I had that problem with EZ CD creator, But after I loaded the latest patch It went away...

Doh!!

Nothing was changed from the configuration other than the domain name. I have tried removing the drive but that hasn't worked yet either.

The utility didn't work either unfortunantly. Thanks for the post though.

Thanks again.

The majority of the users with the problem don't have SP2 on their machines yet. I will setup a test machine with SP2 to see if this corrects the issue.

Thanks,

Kenny
