We recently bought a new computer with XP pro & installed our old cd drive in it. It reads fine, but won't write.

I can copy files to e:, but when I try to actually write them to the cd using the wizard, I get the following:

Insert a writable disc to continue.

There is no disc in the drive.
Please insert a writable cd into drive E:\

After searching this message board, I went to Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Services & checked out the imapi cd burning. It was not running & was set to manual. I changed it to automatic & started it. Then I tried to burn the files again with no luck. When I went back in the imapi settings, it was off again!

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Connie

Hi, have you tried any other cds from different companies ???

David :)

On the Properties of the CD Drive do you have a "Recording" tab?

If you select the tab do you have a check box "Enable CD recording on this drive"

Checking this indicates that you can copy files to the CD. You can only enable CD recording for one device at a time.

Open "My Computer"
Right-click the drive in question.
Properties, Recording tab.

Is writing enabled on this drive?

When I open My Computer & right-click on the cd drive, I only have 3 tabs; General, AutoPlay & Hardware.

I don't see anything about a Recording tab or enable cd recording.

Unfortunately, I only have 1 kind of cd with me at home. I'll swap one out & try another tomorrow, but since I mysteriously am missing the Recording tab, I don't think that's the problem.

Any other ideas, guys?

This is a fix that has helped a lot of people, I can't remember where I copied it from (possibly Microsoft Support), your welcome to try it but back up the Registry Keys (using Export from the drop down menu) before you try it.

"The behavior may be that Windows XP could not recognize the CD-RW drive automatically. Let’s perform the following steps to modify the registry to let Windows XP treats the device as the CD-RW.

1. Run Regedit to open the Registry Editor
2. Switch to the following key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CD Burning\Drives

– All CD drives show up in same key

– “Drive Type” value determines whether drive is capable of writing and rewriting

01=CD-R Drive

02=CD-RW Drive

03=Write Disabled

3. Note: if you have more than 1 CD-ROM / CD-RW devices installed, you will see the related items under the Drivers. Please change the keys one by one, so you can find the correct key.

After doing the above steps, try to burn the CDs in Windows XP.

Just to add to linney's note above, XP is not recognizing the drive as a writeable device.

Let us know if you continue to have problems. There are other registry entries that could possibly help.

Have you thought about using the Microsoft utilities:

. TweakUI -- allows some control over the write capabilities of CD drives:
. A good fix, that does not fix everything. From Microsoft:

OK...I have tried both Memorex & Maxim cds and it does not recognize either.

I downloaded the wizard from Microsoft & it couldn't find any problems.

So I went into regedit and made a backup. Under Drives, I had volumes 2 listed, but could not tell them apart (I have a DVD reader & a CD burner). I set first one, then the other to 2 and rebooted. The wizard still won't see the cd in the drive, but now I have a Recording tab on the properties! Enable cd recording is checked.

Any more ideas??

Thanks,
Connie

I am not sure changing a DVD Read only drive to write will help you. Uncheck any enable recording on the DVD drive and make sure it is checked only on the CDRW drive. Even unchecking it on the CD drive and immediately rechecking it again and hitting Apply and OK may help?

Another thing to consider is that the drive and or its connections are the problem.

Thanks for all your help!

By searching the internet for the cd drive model (LG-8080B), I came up with a lot of help links, including which had an update.

I finally got it working!

Thanks again,
Connie
