I have a CD that is scratched not at the bottom data side, but on the top label side. A bit of the material was scraped off now leaving the CD 'see through' in that spot. The data surface through is smooth and scratch free. It will no longer be read in the drive. Are there any tricks you know of to get this to work?

Use a litte bit of non see trough light green electrical tape over it.(if you can get hold of some)
Trick is to get simular reflection to the laser at
that spot as the other areas of the cd.

A common misunderstanding is that the Data is on the underside of the CD. It isn't. Thats why if you scratch the bottom you can 'buff' it out. The data is actually on the label side. So if you scratch the label side you are much more likely to do damage to the data.

Thanks for replying. So I am assuming that my data is damaged. I will try with the light green electrical tape. I have only ever seen black electric tape, the type that is almost like a thick flat plastic and stretches. Is this green electrical tape the same, an item I can pick up at Canadian Tire? When I think of this tape I think of the light green masking tape for painting. But it is definately a light green electrical tape?

Thanks again

Try with whatever you have in the house at first.
And as blumbra said if the defect is so deep that it has damaged the pressed data it wont help .
But there is nothing to loose trying .
You could also tru to use transparent tape , and covering it on the top with some colored ink from a permanent overhead pen that match the cd's backside reflection color .

I'd think putting a spot of tape on it may make it uneven while spinning at high speeds and cause it to vibrate and comprimise it's integrity. If it's a game that cost like $50 check the manufacturers website. Some will replace the CD for a small price of around $5.

Not so , iv'e marked several cd's with dymo tape
writing stating the content.
Remember that "msammut" only has to read this disk once
into an iso image using nero or something
,then make a copy of it. Not at a daily use.
