I am trying to find some decent packet-writing software for my CD-RW (Plextor W1210) running under Windows 2000, but I'm having the following problems...

1. Bundled with the read/writer was WinONCD 3.7, which is W2K compatible, but the associated packet-writing software (Packet-CD) is not. No upgrade available on website.

2. Nero 5.0 is W2K compatible, but the bundled packet-writing software (InCd) is not. There will be a free upgrade when it is released (Jan 2001 according to the website), but there is no sign of it yet.

3. Adaptec's Easy CD Creator contains DirectCD, which appears to be the most popular solution, but I can't find a supplier here in the UK which has any copies in stock at the moment.

Is there any other software worth trying (perhaps shareware)?

Any help would be appreciated.

I cut this from an older thread here about this subject.

I use EZ CD4, Fireburner 1.6, CDRwin 3.8D, CloneCD 2.8.3.1, and Nero 5.0.3.1 all sucessfully on Windows 2000.

I don't know the reason, but I did get errors with fireburner and cdrwin until I enabled DMA.

But what about the packet-writing software that comes with these applications? Nero's InCD for W2K is not available for a few weeks. EZ CD4 comes with DirectCD, but I can't get hold of it from any supplier I've tried in the UK (long waiting lists).

Where can I get Fireburner, CDRWin or CloneCD in the UK? Can I download them? Do they come with packet-writing software.

TIA,
Alan

Alan, you will need to get EZCD ver 5.0. Earlier versions of Direct CD that comes with earlier versions of EZCD Creator are not compatible with Win2k Pro or Server

If you really want a comprehensive list of CDR software, there's a site to visit. has just about every CDR package out there. I'm certainly not condoning the "warez" ethic there, but it's still a good resource.

Stuff that works well under 2K that I've tried:

Padus Discjuggler (1x only in demo)
CDRWin
CloneCD
Nero 5.0
Blindread/Blindwrite

Fixxxer, thanks for the reply.

Not quite right - I've just managed to get a copy of EZCD version 4.02, and it includes DirectCD 3.01, which is the first version to be W2K compatible. And it's a wonderful piece of software - very user-friendly and worked 1st time!

ShaithisDanoveur,

Thanks for the info. I'll keep the URL for future reference.

I just installed the new EzCD 5 and it's sweet.. so far :) It works much better at high speed ( x6x8) then the old 4.02 I had installed.

Albion...

>There's no solution like Nero 5.x<
Except for the fact that (as far as I know) there is still no InCd for Win2000. I bought Nero 5.0 mainly for InCd and was most disappointed that whereas Nero itself worked great with W2K, InCd wasn't compatible, and I have to wait for the download.

Alan

I stand corrected Alan, it's *my* HP 8100i that is not compatible with DCD 3.x under Win2k. It was the compatibility issue that forced the change to EZCD/DCD 5.0. With 4.02, I would get an error message when installing DCD 3.x that the hardware found was not compatible under Win2k. Fortunately, it is with V5.0

You bet - I'm off to check it out right now.

Thanks,
Alan

I have tried Easy Cd Creator 4.0, / Direct CD, on Windows 2000. After a few problems installing, its fine. The tricks are as follows:
1. Download the latest patches for direct CD and Easy CD from Adaptec.
2. Install Easy CD, and apply the updates in the normal manner, DO NOT INSTALL DIRECT CD YET
3. Install Direct CD DO NOT REBOOT, the intallation will tell you to....but DO NOT...
4. Apply the Direct CD update patches, you will be asked to reboot, this time its fine to reboot.
