Greetings:

I have a Dell Dimension 8200 w/ WinXP Home-SP2 and a 1.8Ghz cpu. I just replaced the mobo w/ another 7G535 model for the system and everything works fine w/ the exception of the music cd's. I've tried Windows Media Player 8, 9 and 10. I've also tried Winamp w/ no success. I checked the cable from the CD-RW to the mobo and there is continuity. The system is able to install programs, etc. but NOT play or copy music cd's to the HDD. I also cleaned the CD-RW hoping that would help w/ no further success. Could it be that the mobo requires certain drivers for the onboard sound? The sound files that are currently on the HDD do play. I have the original CD Drivers for the PC, but that didn't help either. For some reason, I think that the plug-in on the mobo is either bad or I need different drivers.

ANY suggestions are greatly appreciated...

Get the drivers from Dell and install them. Try a different cable and CD drive.

First thing I would ask is what kind of sound files?
Is this an analog audio CD or is it Digital sound file like MP3?

What kind of sound card? Is this integrated sound?

If it is integrated sound you may need a sound driver.

What are the settings on the CDROM drive?
Normally I set mine to Digital. If you use analog you must have a sound cable from the CD drive to the Sound Card/Integrated sound card.

Sometimes you have to load drivers for the motherboard chipset, the soundcard, or the CDROM. Sometimes for Digital sound files you need to download codec's.

If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

Greetings & Tnx for the assistance. I have the drivers from Dell and will try them again. I did replace the CD-RW w/ a known working unit and still received the same messages. In reference to the sound files, the music is on CD which was purchased from music stores. The sound is also on-board. I'll have to try some more drivers to figure this one out.
Let me know if you folks have any other ideas. Tnx in advance!

Try a plain ol' CD player to see if it will play audio CD. This will at least let you know which "end" to start from. Come to think of it, is the CD-RW installed alone or with a regular CD player also installed?

Greetings Micker377:

I swapped out & placed a Creative 52x CD-ROM in that pup & still yielded the same results. My next step is to try a PCI Sound Card w/ a new connection wire and if that doesn't work, my final approach is to do a full format again, only this time I won't install the Service Packs for Micro$oft.

Tnx for the reply...

With XP, you shouldn't need an audio cable as the audio info is normally carried through the IDE cable through the PCI slots. Did you try headphones plugged directly into the front of the CD-RW? There should be sound independant of the audio system of the computer. If your system does require an audio cable, check the audio settings in Media Player > CD and switch between "analog" and "digital" input.

Also, if you are putting a pci sound card in then you want to remember to to disable the onboard sound.
Some mobos come with jumpers for different sound settings, maybe check your manual for that.
Have you thoroughly checked all the settings in the sound section of win xp? Make sure it is not muted.

One important fact here is that you stated "[blue]The sound files that are currently on the HDD do play[/blue]". Because of that, I don't believe there is anything wrong with your sound card or drivers.

Are you receiving any error messages? Or is the player playing the music file on CD, but you just don't hear anything?

FYI: Playing and ripping CD tracks are two very different processes. It is possible that one could work, but not the other. Ripping for example goes over the IDE cable and has nothing to do with your sound card or analog cable. Since both are not working, it would seem that your burning software may be the culprit. Try uninstalling/reinstalling that first before formatting your drive.

You stated: "The system is able to install programs, etc. but NOT play or copy music cd's to the HDD."

Are you saying that you cant rip the music to mp3 from wav files which are on the cd?
If so, then, as cdogg stated, its a software issue. Uninstall and Reinstall software.

Greetings:

I had to start a new account w/ Tek-Tips...I was unable to login at all...anyways, I went ahead and installed a new PCI soundcard along with MusicMatch which makes the system work fine now. The onboard sound has been disabled and all is well. This appeared to be my only fix.
